Flag Football Wraps Up Pool Play After Day One in Indiana

LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland dropped its opening pool play contest at the conference championships, falling 40-19 to Saint Francis on Thursday afternoon.

The Phoenix totaled 341 yards of offense, including 331 through the air, finishing with 17 first downs and controlling possession for over 30 minutes. Quarterback Madison Woodard completed 37-of-55 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns. Je'Leah Cole led all Cumberland receivers with 13 catches for 120 yards and a score, while CallieAnna Griggs hauled in six receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. Jessica Young added eight catches for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Candance Dedrick and Brianna Taylor each recorded five total tackles, while Avery Conger added four stops. Ava Hourigan recorded an interception for the Phoenix.

Saint Francis countered with 417 yards of total offense, averaging over 10 yards per play. Jianna Reyes led the way, throwing for 357 yards and four touchdowns while adding 60 rushing yards and two scores on the ground. Haylee Weatherspoon was her top target, finishing with five receptions for 173 yards and three touchdowns, while Harmany Walker added four catches for 102 yards and a score.

Saint Francis opened the scoring with a pair of quick-strike touchdown passes in the first quarter, including scoring plays of 66 and 68 yards to take an early 14-6 lead. Cumberland answered with a touchdown reception from Cole, but Saint Francis extended the margin with two more scores in the second quarter to carry a 27-12 lead into halftime.

Reyes added a 12-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter as Saint Francis pushed the lead to 33-12. Cumberland added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Saint Francis responded to secure the 40-19 final in the first game of the day. 

In the second contest, Cumberland fell 40-18 to Lindsey Wilson to close out the opening day of championship play.

The Phoenix posted 313 total yards of offense and held possession for more than 34 minutes, but Lindsey Wilson capitalized on explosive plays with 371 total yards on just 39 snaps. Madison Woodard threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns, while Trinity Ryan added 76 rushing yards and a score. Je'Leah Cole paced the receiving corps with nine catches for 92 yards and a touchdown, and CallieAnna Griggs added four receptions for 58 yards and a score.

Defensively, Avery Conger led Cumberland with five total tackles, while Kiah Seay added four stops and an interception. Jada Starnes also recorded an interception return, and Brianna Taylor came away with a late pick in the closing minutes.

Lindsey Wilson was led by Amaya Pablo, who accounted for all six touchdowns with 300 passing yards, four touchdown throws, 71 rushing yards and two rushing scores. Maebrie Cochran was her top target, hauling in four receptions for 181 yards and all four receiving touchdowns.

Lindsey Wilson jumped in front early with two first-quarter touchdown strikes before Cumberland answered on a 50-yard scoring connection from Woodard to Griggs and a late touchdown pass to Cole to trim the deficit to 19-12 after one quarter.

The Blue Raiders added two second-quarter scores to extend the lead to 32-12 at halftime. Cumberland responded in the third quarter when Ryan punched in a 10-yard rushing touchdown after a Starnes interception return set up the short field, but Lindsey Wilson answered with a rushing score from Pablo to maintain control and win 4-18.

Cumberland will continue going in Indiana as bracket play now begins, with the Phoenix squaring off with the Campbellsville Tigers for the third time this season, with the series all tied up at 1-1. Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. CT.
