Phoenix Come Up Short in Twinbill at Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - - Cumberland dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader to Campbellsville, 6-1 and 8-6, as the Tigers capitalized on early momentum and a late comeback to secure the series.

In game one the Tigers blanked the Phoenix as Campbellsville jumped out in front in the second inning, stringing together RBI singles from Hernandez and Liu to build a 2-0 lead. The Tigers continued to apply pressure in the third when Gilbert launched a solo home run to extend the advantage.

The fourth inning proved to be the difference-maker, as Campbellsville plated three more runs. Liu delivered again with a two-run homer to left, and Gilbert followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 6-0.

Cumberland struggled to generate offense throughout game one, managing just two hits against a strong performance from Campbellsville starter McBride, who struck out nine over seven innings.

The Phoenix finally broke through in the seventh inning when Wiser Then came around to score on a Gabriel Reyes sacrifice fly, but it would be the only run of the game for Cumberland. The Phoenix looked to win the series in game three of the series as it was tied up at one.

In game two Cumberland built an early lead behind a power surge from Then, but Campbellsville used a late rally to hand the Phoenix an 8-6 loss on Saturday afternoon.

Campbellsville struck first in the opening inning with a pair of RBI singles to take a 2-0 lead, but Cumberland responded in a big way in the second. Gaines Haussin delivered a two-RBI single to tie the game before Then blasted a three-run homer to cap a five-run frame and give the Phoenix a 5-2 advantage.

Cumberland added to the lead in the sixth when Then struck again, launching his second home run of the day to push the margin to 6-2.

The Tigers began to chip away in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 6-3. The momentum fully shifted in the seventh, as Campbellsville capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting. Gilbert delivered a bases-clearing double to tie the game, and a walk later in the inning brought home the go-ahead run to give the Tigers a 7-6 lead. Hagen singled to push the Tigers lead out to two heading into the top of the ninth.

Campbellsville added an insurance run in the eighth, while the Phoenix were unable to mount a comeback late as the Tigers closed out the win.
The Phoenix will hit the road again on Tuesday to face off against Reinhardt in Waleska, Ga., Cumberland beat the Eagles earlier in the year.
