LEBANON, Tenn. - - Cumberland jumped out to an early lead behind a big first inning, but a late rally from Reinhardt proved to be the difference as the Eagles walked off the Phoenix, 11-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
At the plate, Gaines Haussin helped spark the offense by going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Wilser Then and Cole Freeman each had a home- run and three RBIs, while Aiden McDonald drove in two.Â
The Phoenix came out swinging in the top of the first inning, putting immediate pressure on Reinhardt. Haussin led things off with a double, and Then stayed hot at the plate, launching a two-run home run to give Cumberland an early advantage. Later in the inning, Freeman added to the outburst with a three-run homer after Charlie Rocca and McDonald both reached on walks, capping off a five-run opening frame.
Cohl Proctor got the start on the mound and kept the Eagles off the board in the bottom half of the first, allowing Cumberland to carry that early momentum into the second inning.
The Phoenix continued to add on in the second. Yuito Suzuki led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before Haussin delivered again with an RBI double. After stealing third, Haussin would come home on an RBI single from McDonald, pushing the lead to 7-0.
Reinhardt answered in the bottom half of the inning as Sisson connected on a three-run home run to cut into the lead and make it 7-3.
The Eagles continued to chip away in the fourth inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Reinhardt brought in a run on a groundout before adding another on a bases-loaded walk, trimming the Cumberland lead to 7-5.
After being held scoreless for three innings, Cumberland broke through again in the sixth. Freeman and Suzuki each drew walks before Haussin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then was also hit by a pitch to bring in a run, Suzuki later scored on a wild pitch, and McDonald added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 10-5.
Reinhardt refused to go away, responding in the seventh inning with a two-run home run from Dorsey to make it a 10-7 ballgame heading into the final innings.
The Eagles completed the comeback in the bottom of the ninth. After two walks put runners on base, Smith delivered a game-tying two-run home run down the right field line. Following a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base that moved the winning run into scoring position, Sisson came through with the walk-off single to center field, sealing the 11-10 victory for Reinhardt.
Cumberland will look to bounce back as they hit the road Friday and Saturday for a Mid-South Conference series against Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. Friday's single game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM CT first pitch, followed by a Saturday doubleheader at 1:00 PM CT and 4:00 PM CT.
