Cumberland Outslugs and Outlasts Bethel in Friday Sweep

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland completed a dramatic doubleheader sweep of Bethel on Friday, using a 16-11 offensive outburst in game one before grinding out a 4-3, ninth-inning victory in game two at the Kahlden Complex.

Cumberland used a relentless offensive attack and timely responses throughout to outslug Bethel, 16-11, in game one of the Mid-South Conference series.

The Phoenix improve to 19-24 on the year while handing Bethel (10-24) a setback in a game that featured 27 combined runs and 27 hits. Cumberland's offense piled up 16 runs on 11 hits, drawing 12 walks and launching three home runs in the victory.

Wilser Then continues to swing a hot bat, finishing 2-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI. Cohl Proctor added a perfect 3-for-3 performance with two RBI and a stolen base, while Gaines Haussin drove in two runs and homered. Dylan LaRue and Caleb Royer also went deep as part of Cumberland's power surge.

On the mound, Logan Baskin got the start, but was hit around a bit drawing an early end to his start. Colson Smith picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.1 innings and surrendering two runs. Sora Nishijima threw one inning and Lucas Frank picked up the final two outs to close out the win.

Cumberland jumped out early with a three-run first inning, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Wilser Then. Bethel answered immediately with five runs in the bottom half, taking advantage of six hits and a defensive miscue to grab a 5-3 lead after one.

The Phoenix responded in the third inning, tying the game at 5-5 behind RBI production from Cohl Proctor and Gaines Haussin. Bethel regained the lead in the bottom of the frame, but Cumberland continued to chip away, closing the gap to 7-6 in the fourth on Then's second RBI double of the day.

The turning point came in the fifth inning as Cumberland erupted for five runs. The Phoenix capitalized on walks and timely hitting, with Proctor driving in a run and Corbin Sanchez delivering a three-RBI double to give Cumberland an 11-7 advantage.

Cumberland extended the lead in the sixth inning with three solo home runs from Haussin, Dylan LaRue, and Caleb Royer, pushing the margin to 14-9. The Phoenix added two more runs in the seventh to create separation.

Bethel attempted a late push, scoring twice in the seventh, but Cumberland's bullpen held the Wildcats scoreless over the final frame to secure the 16-11 win.

Game two was the opposite of game one as this game was a back and forth low scoring game that was busted open in the ninth with LaRue go-ahead home run for 4-3 win to sweep the doubleheader.

Carter Whitefield provided a strong start, working 6.0 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out five. Kyle Nyblod tossed the final three innings to get the win giving up three hits and one unearned run.

At the plate, LaRue led the way with a 3-for-3 performance, driving in two runs including the game-winning homer. Haussin added two hits and an RBI, while JT Kelenic's double sparked the offense in the middle innings.

Bethel struck first in the second, but Cumberland answered in the third as Haussin scored on an RBI single from LaRue to even the game at 1-1.

The Wildcats regained the lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a defensive miscue, but Cumberland responded again in the fifth. JT Kelenic doubled to lead off the frame and later scored on a Haussin RBI groundout to tie the game at 2-2.

Both pitching staffs settled in through the middle innings before the Phoenix broke through in the seventh. A combination of patience at the plate and pressure on the defense led to a go-ahead run, as Yuito Suzuki came around to score on a passed ball to give Cumberland a 3-2 advantage.

Bethel answered in the bottom half of the seventh, using a squeeze to plate the tying run and knot the score at 3-3 heading into the final two innings.

In the ninth, LaRue delivered the decisive blow, launching a solo home run to center field, his second homer of the day, to put the Phoenix back in front, 4-3.

Nyblod closed out the game, but not before it got interesting as Bethel had back-to-back two out hits to put runners on second and third. Nyblod induced a groundout to get out of the jam and seal the series victory.

Game three will be played on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in McKenzie. Rain is in the forecast tomorrow and due to the weather the decision was made to play on Sunday instead of Saturday.
