Seven-Run Ninth Seals Sweep for Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland completed the Mid-South Conference series sweep over Bethel on Sunday afternoon, erupting for a seven-run ninth inning to pull away for a 12-3 victory at the Kahlden Complex. With the win, the Phoenix improved to 21-24 overall and surged into third place in the conference standings heading into the final weekend of the regular season against Freed-Hardeman.

Cumberland's offense finished with 12 runs on 11 hits while drawing six walks and launching four home runs. The Phoenix also capitalized on late opportunities, scoring nine of their 12 runs from the third inning on, including the decisive seven-run outburst in the ninth.

Aiden McDonald led the charge with a 2-for-5 performance, scoring three runs while driving in two and blasting a two-run homer. Dylan LaRue added a 2-for-6 day with a home run and two runs scored, while Wilser Then continued his strong weekend with a homer, two runs scored, and three walks. Charlie Rocca provided the knockout blow in the ninth with a three-run homer, and Cole Freeman delivered a perfect 2-for-2 effort with a double and RBI off the bench. Gaines Hauss finished 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored, while Corbin Sanchez chipped in an RBI single.

On the mound, Mateo Santos delivered a strong outing to earn the win, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Jaron Keyser closed the door over the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit while striking out three to secure the series sweep.

Bethel managed just five hits in the contest, with Zayden McCaslin leading the way with two hits. Adriel Vega and Galvin Sims each homered for the Wildcats, accounting for two of their three runs, while Juan Diego Ramos added an RBI. Bethel pitching held Cumberland in check through the middle innings but was unable to contain the Phoenix late surge.

After a scoreless first inning, Cumberland struck first in the second as Then launched a solo home run to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead. The advantage grew in the third when Cohl Proctor lifted a sacrifice fly and Sanchez followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. McDonald extended the lead to 5-0 in the fourth with a two-run homer.

Bethel responded in the fifth with a solo home run from Sims and capitalized on a pair of Cumberland errors to trim the deficit to 5-2. The Wildcats added another run in the eighth on Vega's solo shot, making it 5-3.

The Phoenix put the game out of reach in the ninth. LaRue opened the inning with a solo homer before McDonald and Freeman delivered back-to-back extra-base hits to push the lead to 7-3. Rocca then crushed a three-run homer, and Cumberland added two more runs on a Bethel error to cap the seven-run frame and secure the 12-3 win.

Cumberland will close out the regular season next weekend at home against Freed-Hardeman, with Senior Day festivities scheduled for Saturday.
