BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - - The No. 19 ranked Cumberland Phoenix women's tennis team took care of business in the opening round of the Mid-South Conference Championship, taking down Freed-Hardeman 4-0.

Cumberland secured the doubles point behind convincing wins from Valentina Mendez and Juanita Mendez at No. 2 doubles, along with Maria Arbelaez and Elina Sungatullina at No. 3 doubles. The Mendez's dropped just two games, winning 6-2, while the All-Conference pairing on court three didn't drop one, winning 6-0.

Madeleine Darud and Asya Tislim Timur were leading 3-2 when the match was abandoned.

In singles play, the Phoenix quickly sealed the match with straight-set victories from Asya Tilsim Timur at No. 2, Elina Sungatullina at No. 4, and Ana Melo Bulcao Souza at No. 5. Timur dropped just a single game in both sets as she ran away with the first point, 6-1, 6-1.

Elina Sungatullina dropped one game more, but was just as dominant, winning 6-2, 6-1. The Phoenix's most confident win came from Souza who swept her opponent, 6-0, 6-0.

The Phoenix were competing well on all the other courts when the match was called due to Cumberland getting their critical fourth point. Valentina Mendez led in the second set after dropping the first, Maria Arbelaez led 6-0, 2-1, and Ame Van Eijk also led 6-2, 0-2.

Cumberland now turns its attention to the semifinals, where the Phoenix will face No. 2 seed University of the Cumberlands Patriots tomorrow at noon.
