Phoenix Walk-Off 18th-Ranked Patriots in Game One

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland walked-off the 18th-ranked Patriots in game one to collect head coach Stephanie Theall's 100th career victory, but the Cumberlands answered in game two with a 8-0 win to split the doubleheader.

The Phoenix trailed going into the final frame of game one and fought to tie the game before Abby Chappell lead off the eighth with a double before Sara Brogdon drove her in on a walk-off single to center winning 4-3.

Cumberland totaled nine hits and drew four walks in the win, with Karley Daughrity leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance and a run scored. Hailey Donato added two hits and scored once, while Abby Chappell delivered a key two-RBI single in the third inning and later doubled in the eighth to set up the game-winning run. Sara Brogdon provided the heroics in extras, driving in the winning run with a single to center field.

In the circle, Avery Rauscher (9-8) went the distance, tossing all eight innings while allowing just three runs, two earned,  on six hits with seven strikeouts. She worked around four walks and stranded multiple runners late to keep the Phoenix within striking distance.

Cumberlands was led by Grace Ross, who finished 1-for-2 with a home run, two walks, and an RBI. The Patriots managed six hits in the contest, including a double from Makenzie Henderson and a triple from Maleah Clinton.

Jessica Cord (18-10) suffered the loss despite allowing just three earned runs over seven innings.

After two scoreless innings, Cumberland struck first in the third. Addison O'Dell worked a leadoff walk before consecutive singles from Donato and Elly Castle loaded the bases. Chappell followed with a two-RBI single down the left field line to give the Phoenix a 2-0 advantage.

Cumberlands responded in the fifth, manufacturing a run on aggressive baserunning, stealing home on a first and third play. The Patriots tries a similar play in the third and Chappell gunned the runner out at home to end the inning.

Grace Ross belted a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The Patriots took their first lead in the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of Cumberland errors to push across an unearned run and move ahead 3-2.

Cumberland answered immediately in the bottom half. Daughrity and Donato recorded back-to-back singles, and a throwing error allowed Daughrity to move to third. Castle chopped a ball to short and Daughrity beat the throw home to tie the game and force extra innings.

Rauscher retired the side in order in the top of the eighth, setting the stage for the walk-off. Chappell opened the frame with a double to left, and Brogdon followed with a line drive to center field to bring her home and seal the 4-3 victory.

Game two belong to the Patriots from the beginning as they jumped ahead in the first and never looked back cruising to a 8-0 win.

The Patriots used a steady offensive attack, scoring in each of the first four innings to take control early. Cumberlands totaled 11 hits and eight runs, while the Phoenix were limited to just two hits in the contest.

Elly Castle and Abby Chappell each recorded a hit for Cumberland, with Chappell doubling in the fifth inning. The Phoenix were unable to string together offense, leaving two runners on base.

Madison Croxford (5-6) was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 2.1 innings. Madison Lancaster worked the final 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three runs. Emily Delgado (9-1) earned the win for the Patriots, tossing a complete-game shutout with five strikeouts.

Cumberlands opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Jenna Fabela to take a 1-0 lead. The Patriots added two more in the second, capitalizing on a pair of hits and a Cumberland error to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the third, Cumberlands pushed across two runs on an RBI single from Aniyah White and a run-scoring double from Jae Jae Phillips to make it 5-0.

The Patriots broke the game open in the fourth inning, plating three runs on RBI singles from Makenzie Henderson and Aniyah White to stretch the advantage to 8-0.

Cumberland threatened in the fifth as Chappell doubled to lead off the inning, but Delgado retired the next three batters to secure the run-rule victory.

The final game of the series will take place tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Senior Day festivities are set to take place before the game starts around 12:30 p.m.
