BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--Cumberland opened the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament with a comeback victory on Tuesday night, erasing an early deficit to defeat Lindsey Wilson 5-3 at Bowling Green Ballpark.
The Phoenix used a big middle innings surge and strong pitching down the stretch to advance in the championship bracket.
Cumberland (24-25) finished with 10 hits and plated five runs, doing all of its damage across the fourth and fifth innings.
Gaines Haussin led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run that proved to be the game-winner.
Caleb Royer added a 2-for-4 performance with a double and an RBI, while
Cohl Proctor chipped in an RBI single.
Gabriel Reyes drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and
Camden Williamson scored twice atop the order.
On the mound,
Logan Baskin delivered a strong start, earning the win after tossing 7.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out nine.
Colson Smith worked a clean eighth inning, and
Kyle Nyblod shut the door in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
Lindsey Wilson (19-28) jumped out early with three runs across the first two innings and finished with six hits in the contest.
Andres Duran paced the Blue Raiders offense with a perfect 3-for-3 night, including a double and an RBI. Caden Davis and Isaac Samano each drove in a run, while Bryce Sidler added a hit and scored once.
Jack Ballou took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings, striking out six.
Lindsey Wilson struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a walk, single, and a Cumberland error before RBI hits from Davis and Samano gave the Blue Raiders a 2-0 lead. They added another in the second inning on Duran's RBI double to push the advantage to 3-0.
Cumberland answered in the fourth inning with a three-run rally. After loading the bases, Reyes lifted a sacrifice fly to get the Phoenix on the board, Royer followed with an RBI groundout, and Proctor tied the game with a run-scoring single to left.
The Phoenix took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Williamson reached and Haussin launched a two-run home run to right field, giving Cumberland a 5-3 edge.
From there, Cumberland's pitching staff took control, retiring the Blue Raiders in order in both the sixth and seventh innings and working out of a threat in the eighth before Nyblod closed the game in the ninth.
Cumberland advances in the Mid-South Conference Tournament and will take on the 5-seed Campbellsville tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m.
