Phoenix Drop Series Finale to Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - - The Cumberland softball team wrapped up their season series with the Georgetown Tigers, falling 5-1 in Kentucky.

Scoring started early on in this game, a stark contrast to the previous two games. Karley Daughrity walked in the leadoff spot and advanced all the way over to third on a pair of groundouts. From there Abby Chappell doubled to score Daughrity, while also stealing third, though the top of the first ended with a 1-0 Phoenix lead.

That advantage was short lived as the Tigers came in and had a rhythm from the first pitch, recording three runs on four hits. Avery Rauscher came in and relieved Madison Lancaster after the latter recorded the first two outs of the inning and it would be Rauscher who finished the game for CU.

In the bottom of the second inning the Tiger again struck, hitting a leadoff home run which was the final run scored in the 5-1 contest. Cumberland threatened again in the top of the fourth with a trio of singles from Chappell, Sara Brogdon, and Karsyn France, though the Phoenix were unable to push any across in the frame.

Chappell led the offense for the Phoenix with a pair of hits and the lone RBI, backed up by Brogdon's single and double. Rauscher was strong in her relief effort, pitching 5.1 innings of one-run softball, helping to steady the game after the quick first inning from the Tigers.

Cumberland will be back in action this coming Tuesday, April 7th, heading to Athens for their return trip against the Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs.
