Phoenix Take DH to Sweep Bulldogs in Season Series

ATHENS, Tenn. - - Cumberland secured a doubleheader and season sweep over Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday, earning a 1-0 win in game one before closing out the day with a 3-2 victory in game two.

In the opener, the Phoenix leaned on a dominant performance in the circle from Avery Rauscher, who fired a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts.

Cumberland broke through in the fourth inning when Elly Castle singled and stole second, before advancing into scoring position on an Abby Chappell ground. She came home on a sacrifice fly from Natalie Rector one more batter down the lineup and that lone run proved to be enough as Rauscher shut down the Bulldogs to secure the win .

Game two saw Cumberland strike early and hold off a late push to complete the sweep. Karley Daughrity set the tone at the top of the lineup, scoring twice, while Abby Chappell drove in a run in the first inning. Sara Brogdon added a solo home run in the fourth to extend the lead, and the Phoenix tacked on another run in the sixth.

Tennessee Wesleyan threatened late, scoring in the sixth and bringing the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Madison Croxford stayed composed in the circle. She went the distance, allowing just two runs, none earned, while striking out eight to secure the 3-2 victory and the sweep.

The Phoenix are right back in action tomorrow afternoon, taking on UT Southern for a 1 PM DH.
