Softball Sweeps Firehawks With Two Strong Defensive Performances

LEBANON, Tenn. -- The Phoenix hosted No. 19 UT Southern in a midweek double header at Billy Dee Ross Stadium.

In the first game, the Phoenix started strong, opening the scoring with an Elly Castle single through the middle of the Firehawks infield to get Karley Daughrity to home plate.

In the second inning, Cumberland kept on the pressure, with Kennedy Scott and Hailey Donato hitting doubles, which scored Karsyn France and Scott.

In the middle portion of the game, Tennessee Southern would claw back, getting one run in both the third and fourth innings, and finding multiple long at bats, which brought Avery Rauscher's pitch count up into the 100s by the fifth inning.

In the closing innings, the Phoenix defense would step up, only allowing one hit in the final three innings to take game one of the double header with a score of 3-2.

Cumberland scored three runs on five hits, while allowing two runs on seven hits.

In game two, Tennessee Southern scored first, getting one run in the top of the second inning, as Sara Brogdon got Cumberland out of a bases full jam with a diving catch and tagging the bag for the double play. Brogdon found her way around the bases after a Daughrity two out hit to tie the game in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, with the scoreboard showing all ones, Cumberland's No. 1, Abby Chappell hit a solo home run into left field to break the tie. The Phoenix added another run in the fourth inning with Castle hitting a ball into left field, which scored Daughrity.

As the game headed into the bottom in the sixth inning, Daughrity found another two out hit to put Karsyn France to home plate to double the Phoenix lead.

Madison Croxford allowed only one baserunner in the final three innings as the Phoenix won game two with a score of 4-1, sweeping the double header, and forcing a draw in the season series.

Cumberland scored four runs on twelve hits with two errors, while allowing one run on three hits.

Croxford pitched the complete game, throwing 119 pitches, allowing three hits and one earned run, while getting six punch outs and two walks.
