Tigers Down Phoenix With Blow-Up Fifth Inning

COLUMBIA, Ky. - - In the first round of the double-elimination bracket Campbellsville blew the game open late and rolled past Cumberland 10-2, using a massive fifth inning to flip what had been a tight contest into a run-rule finish.

For four innings, this one felt very much in the balance. Cumberland managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth despite not recording a hit in the inning, capitalizing on walks, an error, and productive situational hitting. Natalie Rector drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk, and Kennedy Scott followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Phoenix their only lead of the game.

After an all-around slow start, that advantage didn't last long. Campbellsville answered emphatically in the bottom of the fifth with an eight-run explosion that completely changed the tone of the game. The Tigers strung together one of their best offensive outputs all season in the frame, highlighted by a three-run home run from Hannah Hackworth, helping to turn a one-run deficit into an 8-2 lead in just one inning.

From there, the Tigers stayed in control and tacked on one more run in the sixth to finish the game prematurely.

Cumberland's Madison Croxford took the loss after giving up six runs over 4.1 innings before the bullpen was forced into a tough spot during the fifth-inning surge.

Offensively for the Phoenix, Elly Castle was a bright spot, going 2-for-3 with a double and scoring a run, while the team showed patience at the plate with six walks, though they ultimately couldn't match Campbellsville's offensive output in the fifth.

The Phoenix will now await the loser of the next game, squaring off with either Lindsey Wilson or Freed-Hardeman at 11 a.m. CT tomorrow morning.
