Phoenix Sweep Georgetown on Military Appreciation Day

LEBANON, Tenn.--Cumberland baseball powered its way to a series sweep on Saturday's Military Appreciation Day doubleheader at Woody Hunt Stadium. The Phoenix blasted seven home runs on the day and scored 30 runs to sweep the conference series over Georgetown.

In game one, after Georgetown struck first in the opening inning, Cumberland quickly answered in the second. Gabriel Reyes tied the game with an RBI double down the right field line before Cohl Proctor launched a two-run home run to give the Phoenix a 3-1 lead.

Cumberland broke the game wide open in the third inning, plating six runs on five hits. Proctor drove in a run with a single before JT Kelenic delivered the biggest swing of the day, blasting a grand slam to center field. Gaines Haussin followed later in the inning with a solo home run to push the lead to 9-1.

The Phoenix continued to add on in the fourth, scoring five more runs. Wilser Then connected on a solo home run, his fourth home run of the weekend, before Kelenic struck again with a three-run blast. Hunter Blanton added an RBI single to cap the scoring and extend the lead to 14-1.

Cumberland finished with 13 hits in the contest, led by Reyes' perfect 3-for-3 performance with three runs scored. Proctor added two hits and three RBI, while Haussin and Dylan LaRue each recorded two hits. Kelenic drove in seven runs on his two home runs to lead the offensive explosion.

On the mound, Carter Whitefield earned the win, tossing six strong innings while allowing just one run on four hits with four strikeouts. He kept Georgetown off balance throughout before Cohl Proctor closed out the final inning with a scoreless frame and a strikeout.

Cumberland completed the doubleheader sweep with a 16-6 victory over Georgetown in game two, overcoming an early deficit with another explosive offensive showing on Saturday afternoon.

Georgetown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended it to 6-4 in the third, but the Phoenix responded immediately and never looked back.

Cumberland tied the game in the bottom of the first behind a two-RBI single from Reyes and took a brief lead in the second on a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. After Georgetown regained the lead
in the third, the Phoenix answered with a five-run inning to reclaim control. Aiden McDonald drove in a run with a groundout before Caleb Royer delivered the key blow, launching a three-run home run to give Cumberland a 9-6 advantage.

The Phoenix continued to build on the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs highlighted by McDonald's three-run double to left center. Cumberland added two more in the fifth on Kelenic's two-run home run and pushed across one final run in the sixth as Yuito Suzuki drew a bases loaded walk to secure the 16-6 victory.

Cumberland totaled 11 hits and drew nine walks, consistently putting pressure on Georgetown pitching. McDonald led the way with four RBIs, while Royer added three RBI on his home run. Kelenic
finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Reyes recorded two hits and two RBIs. Wyatt Hurt scored three runs during the game as well.

On the mound, Colson Smith earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to stabilize the game. Noah Couch and Dom Guistino combined to shut out Georgetown over the final two innings to seal the sweep.

The Phoenix will be in action on Tuesday as they host Tennessee Wesleyan.
