Bulldogs Use Big Middle Innings to Down Phoenix 17-6

LEBANON, Tenn.--No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan used a pair of big middle innings to pull away from Cumberland, defeating the Phoenix 17-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (32-9) scored 10 runs across the third and fourth innings to seize control early and added insurance late, finishing with 16 hits in the contest. Cumberland (17-21) responded with a five-run sixth inning but could not overcome the deficit.

Tennessee Wesleyan struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a throwing error to plate an unearned run. The Bulldogs then broke the game open in the third, scoring five runs on four hits and taking advantage of two Cumberland errors to push the lead to 6-0.

After Cumberland got on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Aiden McDonald, Tennessee Wesleyan answered immediately with a five-run fourth inning. The Bulldogs tallied four hits in the frame, including a two-run double from Kolton Reynolds, extending the lead to 11-1.

The Bulldogs added another run in the fifth on Ethan Wright's first home run of the day before Cumberland mounted its best offensive stretch in the sixth. The Phoenix sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs on five hits. Charlie Rocca drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, Corbin Sanchez and Camden Williamson each added RBI singles, and Chris Meilan highlighted the inning with a two-run single to cut the deficit to 12-6.

Tennessee Wesleyan answered again in the seventh with three runs, highlighted by an RBI triple from Brayan Espinoza, before Wright delivered his second home run of the game in the eighth to cap the scoring at 17-6.

Wright led Tennessee Wesleyan finishing 4-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI, and six runs scored while adding three stolen bases. Reynolds drove in a game-high five RBI, while Allan Gil Fernandez added three RBI and reached base three times.

Cumberland totaled nine hits in the contest, led by Camden Williamson and JT Kelenic with two hits apiece. Meilan drove in two runs, while McDonald, Sanchez, and Williamson each recorded an RBI.

Colton Brumley earned the win for Tennessee Wesleyan, allowing one run on four hits while striking out nine over five innings. Carter Whitefield was tagged with the loss for Cumberland.

Cumberland will be on the road this weekend to take on Campbellsville. The Phoenix sit in a three-way tie for third place in the conference at 4-5.
