Patriots Force Winner-Take-All Championship Game with 14-4 Win

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.--The University of the Cumberlands force the if-necessary championship game with a 14-4 win over the Phoenix Saturday afternoon.

Cumberland (26-26) finished with 11 hits and showed early fight, but the Patriots had big innings later in the game to create separation late in the game. The Phoenix left 16 runners on base during the game.

Dylan LaRue highlighted the offense with a two-run home run, finishing with two hits and two RBI. Gaines Haussin added a pair of hits and an RBI, while Yuito Suzuki went 1-for-3 with an RBI and reached base three times. Aidan McDonald also recorded two hits and reached base four times in the contest.

Cumberlands (45-8) totaled 14 runs on 14 hits, led by Derick Andiarena, who went 3-for-5 with five RBI, including a two-run homer and multiple run-scoring hits.

Pedro Vasquez added a three-run home run, while Caden Petrey and Jay Flynn each drove in multiple runs as the Patriots capitalized on key scoring opportunities throughout the game.

The Patriots struck first in the second inning, taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and an error before Sebastian De La Cruz delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Cumberland answered in the bottom half when Cole Freeman doubled and came around to score on an RBI single from Suzuki, tying the game at 1-1.

Cumberlands regained the lead in the fourth inning, using a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run from Andiarena to build a 4-1 advantage. The Phoenix responded immediately in the bottom half, as Haussin drew a walk ahead of LaRue, who launched a two-run homer to the left field bullpen to cut the deficit to 4-3.

The game shifted in the sixth inning, where the Patriots broke it open with a six-run frame. A leadoff single and consecutive hits loaded the bases before Andiarena delivered a two-run single. Petrey followed with a two-run double, and a sacrifice fly capped the inning, extending the lead to 10-3.

Cumberlands continued to add on in the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by Vasquez's two-run home run and another sacrifice fly, stretching the margin to 14-3.

Cumberland pushed across a run in the ninth on an RBI single from Haussin, but the Patriots had already created enough separation to secure the win and force a winner-take-all championship game.

With the loss, Cumberland will face Cumberlands again in the if-necessary Mid-South Conference Championship game later tonight at Bowling Green Ballpark. Game time is to be determined.
