Phoenix Drop Season Opener to No. 3 Embry-Riddle

LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland women's soccer team opened the 2026 season Saturday afternoon, falling 3-1 to No. 3 Embry-Riddle (Ariz.).

The Phoenix found themselves in an early hole as Embry-Riddle's Natalia Sepulveda scored just past one minute into the contest to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Cumberland responded less than nine minutes later, with Anllely Fuentes finding the back of the net in the 10th minute. Ruth Rodriguez provided the assist on Fuentes' first goal of the season, leveling the match at 1-1.

Embry-Riddle regained the advantage in the 21st minute when Kaitlyn Roskopf scored to put the Eagles ahead 2-1 heading into halftime. Cumberland continued to battle in the second half, but Embry-Riddle controlled much of the possession and generated consistent pressure.

The Eagles recorded 21 shots in the second half alone, forcing Cumberland goalkeeper Sydney Eads to make seven saves. The Phoenix had opportunities to pull level, including a pair of corner kicks late in the match, but could not find the equalizer.

Embry-Riddle added an insurance goal in the 88th minute when Kaylie Speer converted off an assist from Sophia Sink, securing the 3-1 victory.

Eads finished the afternoon with nine saves for Cumberland, while Fuentes and Rodriguez each recorded a point. The Phoenix finished with 15 shots, including four on goal, while Embry-Riddle totaled 33 shots with 12 on frame.

Cumberland will look to bounce back next week as they host Madonna on Wednesday at 1 PM.
