LEBANON, Tenn. -- Cumberland University women's soccer jumped out to a four-goal lead in the first half and held on late to defeat Madonna, 4-3

The Phoenix wasted little time getting on the board, with Uxia Varela opening the scoring in the 11th minute off an assist from Abigale Alexander. It didn't take long until Cumberland doubled its advantage just under four minutes later when Angie Abreu found the back of the net off a pass from Saki Takaki.

The quick start kept going with Victoria Collins adding to the Phoenix lead in the 21st minute, scoring her first goal of the season to make it 3-0.

Madonna answered in the 32nd minute, but Cumberland quickly responded as Abreu scored her second goal of the afternoon just 15 seconds later to restore the three-goal advantage heading into halftime. The home side controlled much of the opening half, outshooting Madonna, 12-3, while taking two corner kicks to the Crusaders' none.

Madonna came out of the break with renewed pressure, cutting the deficit to 4-2 in the 56th minute on a goal from Carly Roth. Roth scored again in the 90th minute to bring Madonna within one, but the Phoenix held firm over the final seconds to secure the victory.

Cumberland finished the match with an 18-8 advantage in shots and held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Sydney Eads recorded three saves in her first win. Abreu led the Phoenix with two goals, while Varela and Collins each added one. Varela also recorded six shots, including two on goal, while Aoi Kanno added three shots.

Cumberland will stay at home for another game this weekend, welcoming in the Milligan Buffaloes for a Saturday doubleheader where the men's team will follow against Tennessee Wesleyan.
