Collins Adds Trio of Goals as Phoenix Pull Away in Second Half for 5-0 Victory

OWENSBORO, Ky. - - The Cumberland women's soccer team put together a dominant showing before conference action kicks off, scoring four second-half goals to pull away for a 5-0 victory over Brescia on the road.

The Phoenix improved to 4-2-0 on the season with the shutout victory, controlling the match from start to finish and finishing with a 37-3 advantage in shots. Cumberland also held a 16-1 edge in shots on goal and earned 11 corner kicks.

It took time for the Cumberland attack to open the scoring but in the 28th minute when Uxia Varela found the back of the net for her second goal of the season, it was the beginning of a blowout. Ana Zamarano provided the assist as the Phoenix carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime, creating a goal in her debut for CU.

The Phoenix continued to push for goals after the break, eventually doubling their lead in the 61st minute. Victoria Collins scored off an assist from Varela to make it 2-0, the first of her hattrick night.

Sabrina Barbosa added her first goal of the season in the 77th minute with Zamarano picking up her second assist of the night on the play, giving the Phoenix a 3-0 cushion.

Collins then took over late, completing her hat trick with goals in the 80th and 86th minutes. Her second goal of the night came unassisted, while her third pushed her season total to seven goals on the season.

Defensively, Cumberland kept Brescia off the scoreboard throughout the 90 minutes. Sydney Eads started in goal and recorded the shutout, making one save as the Phoenix limited Brescia to just three total shots.

The Phoenix will look to carry the momentum into conference play, kicking things off against Bethel on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
