LEBANON, Tenn. -- The No. 20 Cumberland women's soccer team began Mid-South Conference play in impressive fashion with a dominating performance against Bethel University.

The Phoenix defeated Bethel University 9-0 at Lindsey Donnell Stadium. With the win, Cumberland improved their overall record to 5-2-0 and 1-0-0 in conference play.

The Phoenix scored three goals in the first half and six more after halftime. The Phoenix controlled the entire match, outshooting Bethel University 26-7 and holding Bethel University to only one shot on goal.

It did not take long for Cumberland to get on the scoreboard. In the fourth minute, Adelyn Drane put the ball in the back of the net on an assist from Sophia Olivera, giving the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead.

After putting pressure on the Bethel defense for much of the first half, Ruth Rodriguez scored in the 35th minute to extend the lead to 2-0 with a dazzling free kick. The Phoenix scored again before halftime as Ida Kjallgren scored in the 42nd minute with an assist from Lilly Adair to give Cumberland a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

Ruth Rodriguez scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 52nd minute to give the Phoenix a 4-0 lead with a wicked free kick past the keeper. Rodriguez completed her hat trick in the 69th minute when she converted a penalty kick to increase the lead to 5-0.

Over the next 18 minutes, the Phoenix continued to attack the Bethel University goal. Lilly Adair scored twice in less than three minutes as she put the ball in the back of the net in the 70th and 73rd minutes. Victoria Collins had an assist on Adair's first goal. Sophia Olivera added her second assist of the afternoon on Adair's second goal.

Saki Takaki scored Cumberland's eighth goal in the 77th minute off an assist from Wilma Meijer. Uxia Varela scored her second goal of the season in the 87th minute off an assist from Sophia Olivera.

Ruth Rodriguez led the Phoenix attack with three goals on six shots. Lilly Adair contributed two goals and an assist. Uxia Varela and Saki Takaki each added a goal. Adelyn Drane and Ida Kjallgren each scored a goal.

Sophia Olivera turned in a great performance with three assists. Uxia Varela, Victoria Collins, and Wilma Meijer each had an assist. On defense, Cumberland limited Bethel University to only seven shots and one shot on goal.

Sydney Eads made one save over 77 minutes before Cieara Johnson came in for Eads in the second half to help maintain the shutout.

In addition to limiting Bethel University's offensive opportunities, Cumberland also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks and committed only four fouls to Bethel University's seven.

The Cumberland women's soccer team will return to action on the road against West Virginia Tech University on Tuesday, with kickoff set for 1 PM.
