LEBANON, Tenn. - - The Cumberland University men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season Sunday, overcoming an early deficit to defeat SCAD Savannah, 4-1, at Lindsey Donnell Stadium.
The Phoenix improved to 7-0-2 on the season with the victory, scoring four unanswered goals after SCAD Savannah struck first in the 35th minute. Cumberland controlled much of the contest offensively, finishing with a 24-9 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on goal.
SCAD Savannah opened the scoring at the 34:41 mark when Nicolas Lozano found the back of the net. Cumberland answered less than a minute later, with Callum Geoghegan leveling the match in the 35th minute with a glancing header at the enar . Wesley Mendoza provided the assist on Geoghegan's equalizer.
The Phoenix carried that momentum into the second half. Juan Juarez put Cumberland in front just 2:16 into the second period, giving the Phoenix a 2-1 advantage in the 47th minute.
Cumberland added another goal less than 10 minutes later. David Barbakadze doubled the lead in the 56th minute, converting a chance set up by Rodrigo Lasso's shot at the near post. Barbakadze finished the match with a team-high four shots, including two on target.
The Phoenix capped the scoring in the 74th minute when
Kacper Wolicki struck home Cumberland's fourth goal of the afternoon.
Rex Pearce was credited with the assist on the goal.
Cumberland's defense and goalkeeper Pau Gelabert kept SCAD off the scoreboard for the final 55 minutes. Gelabert recorded three saves on four shots on target, with the Phoenix allowing just three SCAD shots on goal after halftime.
The Phoenix also received offensive contributions throughout the lineup, with Mendoza and Lasso each recording an assist while Geoghegan, Juarez, Barbakadze and Wolicki each found the net.Â
Cumberland finished the afternoon with 24 shots, 11 shots on goal and five corner kicks, while limiting SCAD Savannah to nine shots and four shots on target.
With the victory, Cumberland will now get back to MSC action, heading to Georgetown on Thursday night.
