GEORGETOWN, Ky. - - The No. 3 Cumberland University men's soccer team remained unbeaten Thursday night, rolling past Georgetown College, 5-0, in Mid-South Conference action.
The Phoenix improved to 8-0-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the victory, extending their unbeaten start to the season. Cumberland controlled the match throughout, scoring once in the first half before adding four goals after halftime.
Cumberland opened the scoring at the 4:29 mark when David Barbakadze found the back of the net to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 advantage. Cumberland carried the lead into halftime while continuing to create offensive opportunities.
The Phoenix came out strong in the second half, doubling their advantage in the 60th minute. Luis Cerejo found the back of the net at the 59:45 mark, with
Rodrigo Lasso providing the assist.
Cumberland added another goal in the 74th minute when Nicolas Sanchez found the back of the net to extend the Phoenix lead to 3-0
.
The Phoenix continued to apply pressure and added two more goals late in the match. Kacper Wolicki scored in the 82nd minute before
Adrian Jogerst capped the scoring less than three minutes later. Jogerst's goal was assisted by
Oscar Gomez and Sanchez.
Cumberland's defense also turned in a strong performance, holding Georgetown scoreless throughout the match. Goalkeeper Pau Gelabert and the Phoenix defense recorded the shutout while limiting the Tigers' offensive opportunities.
The Phoenix received contributions throughout the lineup, with five different players finding the back of the net. Lasso recorded an assist, while Gomez and Sanchez combined to set up the final goal of the night.
With the victory, Cumberland remains unbeaten on the season and perfect in Mid-South Conference play. The Phoenix will return to action next Tuesday when they hit the road to face No. 6 Georgia Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Ga. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. CT.
