Phoenix Pull Away Late for 4-2 Win at Georgia Gwinnett

Cumberland University men's soccer team defeated Georgia Gwinnett in an intense battle on the road in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The Phoenix scored twice in the closing minutes to win 4-2 and maintain their undefeated record.

With the victory, the Phoenix, currently ranked third in the country, advance to 10-0-2 on the season, while Georgia Gwinnett drops to 5-3-1.

Cumberland outshot the Grizzlies 13-10, including a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal, after taking a 2-0 lead in the first half. In corner kicks, the Phoenix also had a 4-3 lead.

In the twenty-third minute, Rodrigo Lasso opened the scoring with his first goal of the year. The Phoenix added a second with Juan Juarez's goal in the 40th minute, assisted by Luis Cerejo and Lasso, increasing Cumberland's lead just before halftime.

After halftime, Georgia Gwinnett played with vigor, and Pedro Nunes' fifth goal of the year in the 52nd minute cut the deficit in half.

In the 70th minute, the Grizzlies leveled the score after applying more pressure. It is now 2-2 thanks to Francisco Osorio's fourth goal of the year.

Cumberland responded right away. David Barbakadze gave Phoenix the lead again just 76 seconds after Georgia Gwinnett's equalizer. In the 71st minute, Barbakadze scored his tenth goal of the year thanks to an assist from Juarez.

Nicolas Sanchez finished off the game for the Phoenix's with his second goal of the season in the 83rd minute, giving Cumberland a 4-2 lead that would last until the final whistle.

For Cumberland, Pau Gelabert made four saves in goal, two in each half. Dagoberto Romero, the goalie for Georgia Gwinnett, finished with six saves.

Cumberland dominated the first half, winning all four of its corner kicks before halftime and taking six shots to Georgia Gwinnett's four. In response to the Grizzlies' second-half rally, the Phoenix scored two goals in the last twenty minutes to seal the win.

The Phoenix is back in action this Friday with Mid-South conference play at home against Lindsey Wilson with the game set to kick off at 12:30 p.m.
