CU salvages final game at MMC

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cody Ferrell collected two hits and two RBIs and Mike Mandarino tossed a complete game for the victory, as seventh-ranked Cumberland earned a doubleheader split with a 7-5 victory in the second game Saturday against Martin Methodist at Sam Davis Park in Pulaski, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (17-12, 6-3 TranSouth) dropped the first game 3-2 after losing Friday’s opening 7-5. The RedHawks (19-12, 3-3) scored all three runs in the opener with two outs, posting three straight singles in the sixth inning to plate the winning run.

MMC tied the second game with a single and home run with two outs in the fifth before Cumberland scored twice in the seventh, taking advantage of a Martin Methodist two-base error to start the inning.

CU managed just four hits in the opener against MMC pitching, including one earned run and three hits in six innings by starter Josh Brown (5-3). He walked five and struck out four before Brock Glass got the final three outs for his second save in two games of the series.

Keith Kirby (2-3) was again the tough-luck loser, allowing three runs on eight hits with two walks and one strikeout in six innings.

Mandarino (5-1) endured on the mound in the second game, giving up five runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Cory Urquhart, Nick Sydnor and Ferrell each posted two hits for the Bulldogs and Sydnor scored twice in the victory.

MMC starter Steven Dodson (2-4) allowed five runs in the second inning but then kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. He gave up 10 hits, walked five and struck out three.

In the opener the RedHawks took an early lead with a run in the third inning after Justin McQueen reached on an infield single to leadoff. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zack Bailey and scored on a two-out double from Matt Franklin.

Cumberland answered with two runs in the fourth, starting with a walk to Sam Lind and a single by Mandarino. With one out Sydnor walked and Brodie Ross’ single through the leftside plated one run. Mandarino later scored after a fielding error by Brown for a 2-1 CU edge.

But the lead was short-lived, with MMC tying the game in the bottom of the inning. With two outs Clint Gobbell walked, stole second and scored on a triple to left by Keith Tidwell.

Tidwell, McQueen and Bailey each singled with two outs in the sixth, sending Kirby to another one-run loss. The Bulldogs have scored a total of seven runs in Kirby’s last five starts, with the righthander compiling a 1-3 mark during that stretch.

The Bulldogs got the tying run to second game in the seventh against Glass after pinch-hitter Daniel Harrison led off with a single, but Urquhart and Lind both struck out to end the game.

Cumberland started early in the second game, scoring five times in the second inning.

Singles from Sydnor, Ross, Ferrell and Tyler Wheeler started the inning, with Ferrell’s and Wheeler’s hits each plating runs. One batter later Urquhart’s single scored another run and Lind’s sacrifice fly made it 4-0 Bulldogs. Mandarino’s single pushed across the final run of the inning.

But the RedHawks answered with three runs in the third, as Bailey led off with a double before a single from Ryan Jett put runners on the corners. Bailey scored on a failed pickoff attempt by Mandarino and Matt Thomas followed with a two-run homer to leftcenter, cutting the Bulldog lead to 5-3.

MMC tied the game in the fifth, again with two outs, when Thomas singled and Rob Holley followed with a two-run homer down the rightfield line.

Cumberland retook the lead in the seventh, taking advantage of an error by Bailey in leftfield that allowed Lind to reach to start the inning. He went to third on a wild pitch and Mandarino walked, putting runners on the corners.

McGee grounded into a doubleplay, but Lind scored on the play, and Sydnor and Ross followed with walks before an RBI single to center from Ferrell for the final run of the game.

Cumberland returns home this week, facing Campbellsville University and Georgetown College on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, both at 2 p.m.
