Baseball pounds Blue Mountain, 18-3

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cody Ferrell and Sam Lind each homered, Mike Mandarino collected three hits and four RBIs and Cory Urquhart scored five times in Cumberland’s 18-3 victory in seven innings over Blue Mountain College on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (24-21, 8-8 TranSouth) posted season-highs in runs and hits (17) and took advantage of 10 walks from the five Toppers (21-21, 7-9) pitchers. Six CU players registered at least two hits in the game and five Bulldogs drove in multiple runs.

Keith Kirby (4-3) tossed a complete game for the victory, giving up two earned runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out four for his second straight win.

Antonio Butler, Urquhart, Lind, Josh McGee and Will Henderson all posted two hits and Lind, McGee, Ben Foster and Tyler Alford each drove in two runs. Ferrell added three RBIs, including his towering solo homer to leadoff the fourth inning.

Alex Arntfield (1-3) took the loss for BMC but worked less than two innings after being hit by a line drive off the bat of Butler.

Hunter Mize led off the game for the Toppers with a solo homer to left, belting a 2-0 fastball over the wall for his second of the season. Seth Kennedy followed with a single to center, but Kirby settled down and retired the next three hitters.

The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom of the inning after Urquhart reached on a perfect bunt by the mound on the rightside. Lind singled to right, putting runners on the corners, before an RBI single to left from Mandarino.

In the second Henderson singled with two outs and Butler followed with a single off the calf of Arntfield. The injury seemed to affect the lefthander, who threw eight straight balls to Urquhart and Lind before his day ended with a call to the bullpen. Lind’s free pass forced in a run.

Reliever Sam Cruse did not fare much better, with Mandarino and Ferrell each drawing walks, forcing in runs as well, for a 4-1 CU advantage.

CU added four more runs in the third, starting with a leadoff double from Nick Sydnor. He scored on a triple to rightcenter from Henderson and Butler’s sacrifice fly to left plated another run. Urquhart walked with two outs and scored on Lind’s line drive over the rightfield wall, his eighth of the year.

BMC scored an unearned run in the fourth when Ben Wallis doubled with one out and scored on a grounder by Zack Scott when the throw from Urquhart sailed wide of first and rolled into foul territory.

Ferrell led off the bottom of the inning with a towering home run to rightcenter, his second of the year.

The Toppers answered with another run in the fifth with back-to-back doubles from Kennedy and Nate Bell, cutting the Bulldog lead to 9-3.

In the bottom of the inning Butler led off with a walk and Urquhart singled to left. Mandarino’s single to left plated a run before Ferrell was hit, loading the bases. McGee followed with a two-run double to leftcenter before walks to Sydnor and Alford, the last one forcing in another run.

In the sixth Butler doubled to leadoff and Urquhart reached on an error before a walk to Lind loaded the bases again. Mandarino and Ferrell each had RBI singles and pinch-hitter Ben Foster plated two runs with a double to leftcenter. Alford’s sacrifice fly scored the final run for the Bulldogs.

Cumberland and Blue Mountain play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at Noon.
