LEBANON, Tenn. – Sam Lind and Nick Sydnor each homered, but five errors doomed Cumberland in a 9-2 loss Tuesday against Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky.
The Bulldogs (26-22) committed three errors that led to four Campbellsville (32-13) in the third inning and made two more in a two-run sixth inning for the Tigers. Only four of Campbellsville’s nine runs were earned in the contest.
Rusty Devitt (3-0) tossed seven innings for the win, allowing two runs on four hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Cody Ferrell (2-3) took the loss, giving up four unearned runs on three hits in four innings. He walked two, hit a batter and did not record a strikeout.
Chance Kopacz and Gibby Briones each collected two hits and drove in two runs for Campbellsville, while Danny Lapchak scored three times.
The Tigers took an early lead thanks to several miscues by the Bulldogs.
Trent Seamons reached on an error by Lind with one out in the third and Tanner Nielsen followed with a single. Lapchak then bunted and Mike Mandarino’s throw got away, allowing a run to score.
With two outs Briones singled on the infield, plating a run, and another errant throw from Mandarino allowed the third run of the inning to score. Michael Durham doubled home a run for a 4-0 Tigers lead.
Lind homered to rightcenter in the fourth, his ninth of the year, but Campbellsville responded with a run in the fifth.
Lapchak led off with a double and Kopacz singled before a sacrifice fly from Briones pushed the Tigers advantage to 5-1.
Campbellsville scored twice more in the sixth when Craig Edwards was hit to leadoff, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single to right by Seamons. He later came across on an error by third baseman Josh McGee for a 7-1 edge.
Nick Sydnor homered to rightfield for the Bulldogs in the seventh, his sixth of the year.
In the eighth Nielsen walked and Lapchak walked before a two-run triple from Kopacz gave the Tigers a 9-2 lead.
Cumberland heads to rival Trevecca Nazarene for a weekend series starting Friday at 3 p.m.
