Big innings help CU win finale, 10-6

LEBANON, Tenn. – Antonio Butler collected four hits, Richie Seaton added three and Sam Lind drove in three runs, as Cumberland scored five times in the sixth inning to win the final game of the series against Trevecca Nazarene, 10-6, on Saturday at Jackson Field in Nashville, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (28-23, 12-9 TranSouth) posted 14 hits in the contest and led 4-0 early before the Trojans (18-20, 10-9-1) scored six times in the fourth inning to take the lead. CU answered with five runs in the sixth and another in the eighth for the victory in a contest that featured 41 baserunners, including 11 walks by four Trevecca pitchers.

Mike Mandarino (8-2) went the distance for Cumberland, throwing 140 pitches in the process on a day the Bulldogs had few relievers available. The righthander allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He threw just 10 pitches over the final two innings and did well in every inning really except the fourth when he tossed 40 pitches and gave up six hits.

CU stranded 15 runners in the game and was just 5-for-20 with runners in scoring position in the contest. Butler’s four hits were a career-high and he scored twice, while Seaton’s three hits were a season-best for the sophomore.

Ryne Rayburn (2-4), who picked up the victory in Friday’s first game, took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning. TNU starter Rob Rowland allowed five runs on nine hits with five walks and five strikeouts in five innings.

Cumberland started fast, with Butler singling to leadoff the game, stealing second and moving to third on an error by the catcher, and scoring on a wild pitch. Cory Urquhart and Mandarino both walked in the inning before an RBI single by Cody Ferrell an a sacrifice fly from Seaton gave CU a 3-0 edge after a half-inning.

In the second Tyler Wheeler walked and Butler followed with a single, putting runners on the corners, and Lind’s sac fly plated pinch-runner Justin Johnston for a 4-0 lead.

Luke Fennell led off the Trojans fourth inning with a single to left and Caleb Knox followed with a single. Blake Rogers bunted his way on, loading the bases, before Ferrell booted a grounder off the bat of Tyler Wallin, allowing one run to score.

Michael Maxwell then doubled down the leftfield line, scoring two runs, but Wallin was thrown out at the plate. Maxwell went to third on a wild pitch and Matt Dobbins walked before an RBI single by Nick Howell tied the game at four.

An infield single by Mark Rayburn plated Dobbins and Matt Tidwell scored the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Bulldogs answered with five runs in the sixth, starting with a leadoff double from Butler, his fourth of the contest. Urquhart reached on an error and Lind doubled down the leftfield line, plating two runs. Ferrell and Seaton both followed with singles and Ben Foster plated a run with a sac fly to center.

Nick Sydnor then singled and Wheeler walked, loading the bases, and Seaton scored on a balk for a 9-6 advantage.

In the eighth Foster and Sydnor both walked and pinch-hitter Heath Holliday’s infield single plated pinch-runner Ryan Critchelow with the final run.

Cumberland hosts Freed-Hardeman in the final three games of the regular season this coming Thursday and Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium. Thursday’s doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. and Friday’s single game begins at 2 p.m.
