LEBANON, Tenn. – Corey Davis hit a three-run homer in the first and a two-run shot in the third and six Lee University hurlers limited Cumberland to just five hits, as the No. 1-ranked Flames won 6-3 on Tuesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Cumberland (20-19) lost for the seventh time in the last nine games over the last two weeks, another low-scoring affair in which the Bulldogs were unable to generate enough offense. Mike Mandarino accounted for three of CU’s five hits in the game, including a solo homer in the first, but the rest of the lineup was just 2-for-29 with three walks and 12 strikeouts.

Devin Stovall (1-4) gave up both of the home runs to Davis but otherwise pitched well, working into the seventh and scattering 11 hits. He walked two and struck out seven before giving way to Cody Ferrell, who tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to finish the game.

Mike Fasolo (2-0), the second pitcher of the game for the Flames (36-6-1) posted the victory, tossing two shutout innings and allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts. The final five hurlers for Lee gave up just two hits and two walks and struck out nine after starter David Eskew allowed three runs and three hits in two innings. Jose Samayoa tossed the ninth for his fourth save of the year.

Mike Moore posted three hits and Jorge Saez, Blake Barber, Edmanuel Rivera and Max Harvell each collected two hits for Lee, which finished with 14 hits in the contest. But the Flames stranded 11 runners in the game, including a pair of runners in the second, seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Saez walked and Barber singled in the first inning before Davis belted a three-run blast to center for his eighth home run of the season.

Cumberland answered in the bottom of the inning with solo shots from Cory Urquhart and Mandarino and tied the game at three with a run in the second.

Heath Holliday walked with one out and went to second on a balk. He scored on a two-out single from Antonio Butler.

In the third Roberto Reyes led off with a single before Davis’s second homer of the game, this one to right, for a 5-3 Lee advantage.

It stayed that way until the seventh when Saez led off with a double and pinch-runner James Fowlkes went to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Then a ball got away from catcher Tyler Alford toward the visitor dugout. Fowlkes started toward the plate but stopped halfway down the line, but Alford’s throw to the plate got by Stovall and Fowlkes scored when third baseman Josh McGee’s throw ended up back to Alford, past Stovall again, for the final run of the game.

Cumberland heads to 21st-ranked Georgetown College on Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT and will host Bryan College this Saturday in a Noon doubleheader.
