JACKSON, Tenn. – Sam Lind hit a pair of solo homers for Cumberland but Danny Grimm was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and Will Irvin tossed a complete game, his second one this season against the Bulldogs, in a 4-2 Union victory in the opening round of the TranSouth Championships here Monday at Fesmire Field.
With the loss Cumberland (30-25) will take on top-seeded Freed-Hardeman in a loser’s bracket game at Noon on Tuesday. FHU lost 8-7 in the opening game of the tournament by Blue Mountain.
Lind hit solo homers in the fourth and seventh innings, tying the game each time, and added a double in the eighth. He also lined out to right in the first inning, collecting three of the team’s six hits in the contest.
Cumberland had just two baserunners in the first six innings of the contest before Lind’s solo homer led off the seventh. Mike Mandarino followed with a double and Cody Ferrell and Tyler Wheeler both walked later in the inning, but CU left the bases loaded.
In the ninth Ferrell doubled with one out and Wheeler again walked, but pinch-hitter Craig Monson’s pinch-hit line drive hit off first baseman Kody Pinson’s leg, bounced toward the bag and Pinson beat the runner to the base for the final out.
Irvin (8-2) allowed just six hits, walked three and struck out five in the complete game. The righthander gave up only four hits in eight innings in a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs in Jackson on March 30.
Mandarino (9-3) took the loss, giving up three earned runs on 11 hits in eight innings. He walked three, hit one batter and struck out one. The Bulldogs turned a pair of double plays and also threw a runner out at third trying to take an extra base.
Union (34-17-1) got on the board in the first inning, with Grimm starting the inning with a single to rightcenter. He went to second on a passed ball and third on a single by Clint Barnes. Grimm scored on a groundout by Doug Joyce.
Lind’s line drive homer to right in the fourth, his 11th of the season, tied the contest at one.
Grimm reached on an infield single behind the third base bag to start the Union fifth and moved to second on a groundout by Barnes. Joyce’s two-out double down the leftfield line plated Grimm for a 2-1 edge for the home team.
Lind’s second homer of the game, also to rightfield, tied the game to leadoff the seventh.
Union responded in the bottom of the inning, again with Grimm starting the inning with a single. He went to second on a sac bunt by Barnes and scored on Brett Pawlan’s triple down the rightfield line. Two batters later Cole McAdams doubled down the leftfield line, plating Pawlan for a 4-2 UU advantage.
