Bulldogs sweep Bryan College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – Chipper Smith tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and Mike Mandarino struck out a career-high 11 in the second game in Cumberland’s doubleheader sweep, 5-0 and 6-1, against Bryan College Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Field.

The Bulldogs (22-19) swept a doubleheader for the first time since March 10 against Lyon College, a pair of 1-0 victories on that day against the Scots. Pitching was the difference in Saturday’s sweep as well, as Smith and Mandarino each allowed just three hits.

Smith (5-6) struck out eight while walking four and hitting one in his victory. He worked around a pair of walks in the second and fourth innings and two singles in the seventh to end a personal three-game losing streak for the lefthander.

Mandarino (6-2) allowed two hits in the first inning and then retired 19 of the final 20 batters of the game. The righthander did not walk a batter and posted just the second double-digit strikeout performance of the season for the Bulldog pitcher. Smith struck out 14 in his no-hitter in February against Point Park University.

Cory Urquhart doubled twice, drove in a run and scored twice in the opener and Mandarino provided his own offense in the second game, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his conference-leading 12th of the year.

The Bulldogs scored four unearned runs in the sixth for some insurance, taking advantage of three errors. Cody Ferrell, Will Henderson and Heath Holliday all drove in runs in the inning for CU.

In the opener the Bulldogs finally got on the board with three runs in the fifth, starting with a one-out single by Antonio Butler. Urquhart then doubled down the leftfield line and Daniel Harrison walked, loading the bases. Sam Lind’s medium fly ball down the leftfield line was deep enough to score Butler from third and Mandarino followed with an RBI single through the leftside.

Ferrell then ripped a ball to the second baseman and Tyler Latham booted it and threw it away, allowing Harrison to come across for 3-0 Bulldog lead.

In the sixth Craig Monson was hit to leadoff, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Wheeler and scored on Urquhart’s two-out double. Harrison then blooped a soft single to right, plating Urquhart, for the final run of the game.

Tanner Brown (7-2) took the loss for the Lions, allowing two earned runs on four hits in 4.2 innings. He walked four and struck out three. Zach Breazeale tossed the final 1.1 innings for Bryan, giving up two runs on two hits.

The Lions scored first in the second game, with Kevin Layne doubling to rightcenter with one out in the first. He scored on a two-out single to center by DeWayne Boyd. Bryan had just one other baserunner against Mandarino, a one-out single in the fifth by Steven Brown.

Harrison walked on four pitches in the fourth before Mandarino belted the first pitch over the wall in leftfield, giving CU the lead for good.

In the sixth pinch-hitter Brodie Ross laced a ball to short and Steven Brown booted it before Mandarino singled to left. Josh McGee’s hard grounder to second was Latham’s third error of the day, allowing a run to score. Ferrell then singled to center, plating a run and ending the day for BC starter Jason Ridenhour.

Henderson and Holliday each had RBI singles against reliever Isaac Meyers for the final runs of the game.

Cumberland hosts Indiana University-Southeast on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and heads to Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. contest.
