Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – Kevin T. Greene and Anthony Gomez both tossed complete-game shutouts, allowing a combined five hits and striking out 16, as Cumberland swept a doubleheader against Union University, 3-0 and 1-0, Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field.

Both games took about 90 minutes to play and featured just 14 total hits between the two clubs on a cold and blustery day that included intermittent snow showers.

Greene (2-0) gave up just two hits and struck out 11 while walking one batter. The lefthander retired the first eight hitters of the game before allowing a walk and a single. He then set down 11 in a row before allowing a single in the seventh inning. The Knoxville, Tenn., native struck out the final two batters of the game to finish off the one hour, 31-minute affair.

The second game was much the same, with Gomez (2-0) giving up three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Union threatened twice against the lefthander, drawing a walk and a single in the fourth and sixth innings, but Pierson Waring struck out to end the fourth and Matthew Fuller lined out to left to finish off the sixth. Gomez worked around a walk in the seventh as well.

Josciel Veras collected two hits and drove in a run in the first game while Justin Johnston had two hits and scored the only run in the second contest for CU. Craig Monson drove in Johnston with a groundout in the third inning of the 1-0 victory.

Jared Davis (0-1) tossed four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five walks and five strikeouts in the first game for Union. John Reed worked two shutout frames to finish off the game.

Derek Rook (0-1) took the loss in the second game, giving up one run on two hits in four innings. Benjie Fesmire pitched the final two innings for the visitors.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the second inning in the opening game, starting with a walk to Richie Seaton and a double by Brodie Ross. Groundouts by Tyler Alford and Cory Urquhart both scored a run.

In the fourth Alford led off with a single and Robert Gonzalez walked before a sacrifice bunt by Urquhart put runners on second and third. A single by Veras plated pinch-runner Chris Del Bianco for the final run of the game.

Cumberland left the bases loaded in the first inning as well after Urquhart walked, Veras singled and Monson singled, but Daniel Harrison popped out and Tyler Anderson struck out to end the inning.

In the second game Johnston singled to leadoff the third, went to second on a bunt by Ryan Critchelow, third on a wild pitch and scored on Monson’s grounder to second.

Cumberland plays at 18th-ranked Auburn Montgomery on Sunday at 5 p.m., starting a stretch of six straight games against ranked opponents. The Bulldogs also play at AUM on Monday and face No. 9 Faulkner University on Tuesday before beginning Mid-South Conference play next weekend with a three-game home series versus 20th-ranked Georgetown College.
