LEBANON, Tenn. – Pikeville scored three times in the bottom of the ninth, squeezing in the winning run, as the Bears won the final game of the series, 6-5, over Cumberland on Saturday at LeMaster Field in Pikeville, Ky.

The Bulldogs (17-9-1, 7-2 Mid-South) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the home team scored three times in the bottom of the third. CU added two runs in the sixth and took a 5-3 edge into the final half inning before Erik Manning’s two-run double tied the contest again and pinch-hitter Corey Gilligan successfully squeezed in the winning run for a Bears victory.

Brodie Ross collected three hits in the contest for the Bulldogs and Craig Monson and Tyler Anderson each posted a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Jake Collier tossed five innings in the start for Cumberland, allowing one earned run on four hits. Tyler Adams (1-1) cruised through three innings of relief before running into trouble in the ninth, hitting Simon Beeson and giving up singles to Sean Ryan and Bryan Bradley, loading the bases.

Evin Einhardt gave up the two-run double to Manning but got a groundout before the squeeze play to end the game.

Mike Rappazzo (3-0) worked four innings of relief for the win for the Bears, allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts. Pikeville starter Joe Valentino lasted five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Cumberland scored twice in the first inning after a leadoff single by Cory Urquhart and a two-out double from Ross. Richie Seaton struck out but reached on a wild pitch, setting up Anderson’s RBI single to center.

In the third Ross led off with a single but Seaton bounced into a fielder’s choice. Seaton stole second, though, and scored on Anderson’s single to rightcenter for a 3-0 advantage.

The Bears took advantage of two errors to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Ryan walked with one out and pinch-runner Adam Overbay stole second before a single on the leftside put runners on the corners. Manning’s single to left plated one run before two errors on the same play helped Pikeville score twice.

Pat O’Brian reached on a fielding error by Urquhart at short and then Ross booted the ball in the outfield, allowing both runners to score on the play for a 3-3 contest.

The Bulldogs took back the lead in the sixth when Justin Johnston walked and Urquhart singled to start the frame. Both runners moved up on a bunt by Chris Hall and came across on Monson’s two-run single through the right side for a 5-3 advantage.

Collier stranded a pair of runners in the first after two walks and again in the fifth after a two-out double by Manning and a single from O’Brian.

Adams retired seven of the first eight batters he faced before giving up two singles in the eighth, but he worked out of that inning with a pop-up and a fly ball. But he could not escape the trouble in the ninth.
