Four-run inning propels CU victory

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Eight Cumberland pitchers allowed just five hits and worked out of jams in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings Tyler Anderson posted two RBIs and Brodie Ross added two hits in a 4-2 victory over Bethel University on a cold and windy Wednesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Garrett Treadwell tossed two innings in the start for the Bulldogs (19-10-1) and five others worked one inning apiece. Jake Collier (2-1) picked up the win with 1.1 hitless innings of relief, walking one and getting a ground ball to end the fourth inning before starting a run-down to curtail a possible rally in the fifth.

Cumberland scored all four runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Daniel Harrison, an RBI single by Richie Seaton and Anderson’s two-run double into the leftfield corner. Five of CU’s nine hits in the contest came in that inning and the club had just one other good scoring chance, putting runners on first and third with no outs but failed to score after Hunter Bartlett was thrown out at the plate on a bunt by Chris Hall.

Bethel starter Blake Chandler (2-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out two and kept the Bulldogs in check except for the one inning. Michael Brasili and Brett Adams paced the Wildcats (11-11) attack with two hits apiece.
The Wildcats scored first in the game thanks to a pair of hit batters and a walk in the fourth inning.

With two outs Brasili walked and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches by Matthew Sedgwick. Taylor Follis was hit, putting runners on first and third for Brett Adams, who dumped a single down the leftfield line for a 1-0 Bethel lead. Sedgwick hit another batter in the inning before Collier got the final out of the inning.

The Bulldogs answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame, starting with singles from Hall and Craig Monson. A sacrifice bunt by Ross turned into an infield single when it got past the Chandler, loading the bases.

Harrison’s sacrifice fly tied the game before an RBI single to right by Seaton put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1. Anderson then ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line for a 4-1 edge.

Bethel threatened in the fifth after a leadoff walk to Tyler Roberson, who went to second on a sacrifice by Brian Ferrell and third on a wild pitch. Tyler Murphy hit a chopper up the middle, but Collier snagged the ball and caught Roberson in a run-down, ending the threat.

Brasili led off the sixth with a single, but a nice turn at second base by Cory Urquhart helped complete a 4-6-3 doubleplay.

The Wildcats cut into the lead with a run in the seventh, starting with a leadoff double by Lance Jarreld. Roberson reached on an error by third baseman Anderson, putting runners on the corners, and a groundout by Ferrell plated a run. But Murphy grounded out and Martin Key flied out, ending the inning with the Bulldogs still leading 4-2.

In the ninth Monson walked the leadoff batter, pinch-hitter David Gardner, and also issued a free pass to Ferrell with two outs, but Murphy grounded out to end the game.

Cumberland hosts St. Catharine College this weekend in a three-game series, with Friday’s single game starting at 2 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader beginning at Noon. The Bulldogs play 12 straight games on the road after Saturday before returning home April 12.
