Four-run sixth helps CU sweep twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to win the second game and Anthony Gomez tossed 7.2 scoreless innings in the opener, as the Bulldogs swept a doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-3, against St. Catharine College on Friday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (21-10-1, 9-2 Mid-South) and Patriots will play the final game of the series on Saturday, starting tentatively at Noon, weather permitting.

Gomez allowed just five hits in 7.2 innings in the first game, working around six walks with four strikeouts. The lefthander was in-and-out of trouble the whole game, with at least one Patriots baserunner in every inning.

KC Mejia and Tyler Mischel both singled with two outs in the first, but Eric Standafer grounded out to end the threat. In the third Carlos Hernandez singled with one out and CJ Englestad followed with a double down the leftfield line, but a good relay from Brodie Ross to Cory Urquhart to Tyler Alford nailed Hernandez at the plate in SCC’s best scoring opportunity of the game.

Gomez walked Jeremy Turpin and pinch-hitter Josh Whitmer in the seventh, but Hernandez flied out to center to end the inning.

Craig Monson finished 3-for-3 with a solo homer, two doubles and two RBIs, supplying most of the offense for the Bulldogs. Justin Johnston’s ground ball double past the third base bag provided an insurance run for CU in the seventh inning.

SCC (22-9, 5-3) starter Dylan Shoffner dominated the Bulldogs for five innings in the second game, allowing just two hits, two walks and a hit batter. But Matt Wagner entered the contest to start the sixth and CU took advantage, with a single by Monson’s off the pitcher’s glove and walks to Ross and Tyler Anderson forcing a pitching change.

Cory Klinger (3-1) did not fare much better, allowing RBI singles to Richie Seaton and Tyler Alford and hitting Justin Johnston, forcing in the tying run. Cory Urquhart then dumped a single into short right, pushing across the winning run.

The rally backed up Kevin T. Greene (4-0), who pitched brilliantly except for one inning. The lefthander allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts, retiring the final 13 batters of the game.

Monson’s solo homer to rightcenter in the bottom of the first, his first of the season, put the Bulldogs ahead early in the opener.

Harrison was stranded at third after a leadoff double in the second inning and CU did little against SCC starter Eddie Rivera until the sixth inning.

Chris Hall led off the sixth with a beautiful bunt single down the third base line and Joel Cooper’s throw went most of the way down the rightfield line. Monson then ripped a double by SCC first baseman Standafer for a 2-0 edge.

In the seventh Alford chopped a single on the left side and pinch-runner Chris Del Bianco moved to second on a balk. Johnston worked the count against Rivera and thought he walked, but home plate umpire Joseph Lubarsky indicated a full count. On the next pitch Johnston grounded past a diving Cooper for an RBI double.

Gomez walked Mejia in the eighth but got a line out by Mischel before giving way to Jake Collier, who got the final four outs for his first save of the year.

In the second game St. Catharine plated three runs in the third to take a commanding lead.

Trevor Schneider led off with a single and Hernandez followed with a one-out single to rightcenter, putting runners on the corners. Englestad’s bunt down the first base line pushed across a run before Mejia belted a two-run homer to leftcenter, his first of the year, for a 3-0 SCC advantage.
