Bulldogs drop 1-0 decision at Wesleyan

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Corey Rhoney tossed a four-hit shutout with no walks and five strikeouts for No. 9 Tennessee Wesleyan in a 1-0 victory over 15th-ranked Cumberland on Friday, outdueling Kevin T. Greene in a game that featured just 11 baserunners between the two teams at Jack Bowling Field in Athens, Tenn.

Cory Urquhart posted two of the team’s four hits for the Bulldogs (24-12-1), singles in the first and sixth innings, while Brodie Ross doubled in the seventh and Tyler Alford added a two-bagger in the ninth. Ross and pinch-runner Hunter Bartlett were both stranded at third, with Rhoney getting a pair of groundouts to end the seventh and a line out and another ground ball to finish off the eighth.

The righthander (5-0) induced 11 ground ball outs and threw 72 strikes among his 107 pitches in the contest.

Greene (4-1) was the unlucky loser, giving up only six hits and one walk with four strikeouts in eight innings of work. The lefthander got a doubleplay to end the second inning after a single from Trey Griffin and Brad Carpenter lined out to finish the third inning after singles by Branden Walker and Travis Burnside.

Griffin singled and Wes Minton walked in the TWC fourth, but Alford threw out Griffin trying to steal third, the first of two runners thrown out by the CU catcher at third in the game.

Wesleyan broke through in the sixth when Burnside dumped a single into short right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Carpenter. Jake Stone’s double down the leftfield line plated Burnside with the game’s only run.

The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday starting at Noon Central Time before the Bulldogs continue their current 12-game road swing with a single game on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Central at top-ranked Lee University.
