Bulldogs split with No. 12 Lindsey Wilson

LEBANON, Tenn. – Craig Monson collected five hits and four RBIs and Anthony Gomez tossed five innings for his fourth win, as Cumberland split a doubleheader against No. 12 Lindsey Wilson on Monday, winning the opener, 10-2, before falling in the second game, 7-5, at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The two conference teams played nonconference games after the Bulldogs weekend series was canceled completely and the Blue Raiders played two of their three games against the University of Rio Grande.

Gomez allowed two runs on six hits in five innings for the win in the opener, upping his mark to 4-0 on the young season. The lefthander walked three and struck out one while throwing 78 pitches.

His teammates scored five runs in the first three innings and then broke the game open with five more runs in the fourth and fifth. Daniel Harrison drove in four runs in the 10-2 victory with a two-run double in the third, a sacrifice fly in the first and a run-scoring single in the fifth. Monson added a two-run double in the sixth, as the Bulldogs (9-5-1) pounded out 12 hits in the win.

Chris Hall and Cory Urquhart each added two hits and Hall scored four times in the contest.

In the second game LWC’s Manuel Alonso had a two-run single and Jeandro Andino belted a grand slam to give the Blue Raiders a 6-0 lead. The visitors led 7-0 before Cumberland scored four times in the sixth, including an RBI double from Monson, an RBI single by Brodie Ross and a two-run double from Harrison, cutting the deficit to 7-5.

Jake Collier (1-1) allowed six runs on seven hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs. Kevin P. Greene and Kevin T. Greene combined to toss four innings of relief, giving up one run on six hits.

The Blue Raiders (13-6) scored a run in the top of the first in the opener with a one-out double from Trey Davis. Alonso followed with an RBI single to center for a 1-0 lead.

CU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with leadoff singles from Urquhart and Hall. Monson walked, loading the bases, before consecutive sacrifice flies from Richie Seaton and Harrison put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1.

In the third Johnston led off with a single and Urquhart walked. Monson drove in a run with a single through the right side and Harrison plated two runs with a two-out double to rightcenter for a 5-1 CU advantage.

Leandro Perez doubled with one out in the fifth for Lindsey Wilson and Davis followed with an RBI single to center. But the Bulldogs answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Hall led off with a single and Monson doubled before an RBI single to right by Seaton. Harrison singled through the right side, plating another run, and Ross’ line out to leftcenter pushed across Seaton for an 8-2 lead.

In the sixth Urquhart singled with one out and pinch-hitter Andrew Henson doubled down the leftfield line. Monson’s single to right scored two runs for the final tallies of the game.

LWC starter Aaron Mayfield (2-3) took the loss, allowing eight runs on nine hits with four walks in five innings.

In the second game Russ Morse, Perez and Davis all singled to leadoff the third inning and Alonso followed with a two-run single up the middle. With one out Mitchell Osnowitz walked, loading the bases for Andino, who homered to left, clearing the bases for a 6-0 LWC advantage.

Johnston led off the fourth with a triple for the Bulldogs and scored on a sac fly from Seaton.

LWC got another run in the sixth when Jeff Kerian doubled to leadoff and scored on a double by Perez.

In the bottom of the inning Urquhart led off with a single and Monson doubled with one out, plating Urquhart. Seaton then reached on an infield single, putting runners on the corners, and Ross followed with an RBI single to left.

Harrison plated both runners with a double to rightcenter, cutting the deficit to 7-5 and prompting a pitching change for the Blue Raiders. Henson pinch-hit again and walked and Hall followed with a single to right, loading the bases, but Ian Huss and Urquhart both struck out, keeping it a 7-5 contest.

In the seventh Johnston reached on an infield single to leadoff and Ross singled to center with two outs before Harrison’s strikeout to end the game.

England Smith (1-2) picked up the win for LWC, allowing five runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out four. Daniel Pulliam picked up his second save with 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Cumberland plays Tuesday at Freed-Hardeman before hitting the road again for a three-game series this weekend at Shawnee State.
