Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Craig Monson and Justin Johnston each posted two hits, but 12th-ranked Cumberland stranded 10 baserunners and No. 18 Freed-Hardeman used a four-run sixth inning to take the lead in a 7-4 victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday at Carnes Field in Henderson, Tenn.
The loss ends a season-best eight-game winning streak for the Bulldogs (33-14-1) in their final nonconference road game of the season. Cumberland plays its final five regular season contests this coming week, all at home, before the Mid-South Conference Championships on April 25-28 at Hunter Wright Stadium in Kingsport, Tenn.
The Bulldogs scored single runs in the second and third innings but Freed-Hardeman (35-6-1) tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Lions took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth thanks to two-run singles from Justin Mackey and Joe Mike. CU plated a run in the ninth and had the bases loaded, but Tyler Anderson bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the game.
Greg Young (3-1) picked up the win for the Lions, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Drew Suttles got the final two outs for his second save of the year.
Nick Conley (3-2) suffered the loss for Cumberland, giving up six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. The righthander allowed four runs on four hits in the sixth inning, ending his day and surrendering the lead for CU.
Cumberland plated single runs in the second and third innings to take an early lead.
Brodie Ross doubled to leadoff the second and Anderson followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. With one out Johnston singled down the rightfield line for a 1-0 edge.
In the third Cory Urquhart led off with a single and Chris Hall was hit before a sacrifice bunt by Monson moved the runners to second and third. Ross walked, loading the bases, and Urquhart came across on Anderson’s groundout for a 2-0 lead.
The Lions tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth before taking the lead with four runs in the sixth.
Bob Seda doubled down the leftfield line to start the fourth and went to third on Garrett Ferguson’s sac bunt. Jake Todd’s infield single cut the Bulldog lead to one.
In the fifth Mackey singled down the rightfield line with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike singled up the middle, tying the contest at two.
Lincoln Lakoff singled up the middle to leadoff the sixth for FHU, but Conley recorded two outs before giving up a double to Kyle Dearing. Ryan Huber walked, loading the bases, and Mackey delivered a two-run single down the rightfield line. Mackey stole second before a two-run single up the middle from Mike gave the Lions a 6-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the seventh when Urquhart and Hall both walked and Monson doubled to leftcenter. Urquhart scored on the play, but Hall was thrown out at the plate.
Freed-Hardeman plated an insurance run in the eighth when Dearing drew a leadoff walk and Huber singled against CU reliever Evin Einhardt. Mackey reached on a bunt single, loading the bases, but Einhardt got a strikeout and a foulout before forcing in a run with a free pass to Ferguson.
In the ninth Tyler Alford singled to start the frame and Hall singled with one out. Monson walked, loading the bases, and Ross plated a run with a sacrifice fly before Anderson’s ground ball ended the contest.
Cumberland plays Mid-Continent on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and long-time rival Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday at 3 p.m., both at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium. The Bulldogs conclude the regular season next weekend with a three-game series against Bluefield College starting Friday.
