Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Craig Monson and Tyler Alford each drove in three runs and Josciel Veras collected four hits, including a solo homer, as 12th-ranked Cumberland pounded out 21 hits in a 17-7, eight-inning victory over Mid-Continent on Tuesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (34-14-1) recorded just two extra-base hits in the game but punished six Mid-Continent hurlers (11-32), scoring multiple runs in four innings, including seven in the fifth. Monson posted three hits and Cory Urquhart and Chris Hall both scored three runs for CU.
Matthew Sedgwick (2-0) tossed 5.1 innings of relief to post the victory, by far the longest outing of his career. The righthander allowed one unearned runs on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Caleb Luttrell (1-3), the second MCU pitcher, took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.
Cumberland scored twice in the first inning when Urquhart and Hall both walked to start the frame and Urquhart scored on Monson’s single to right. Hall came across on Daniel Harrison’s single to right as well for an early advantage.
MCU got a run back in the second after a leadoff walk to Reed Vaughan and a wild pitch. CU starter Garrett Treadwell then hit Jordan Manney and Jordan Adams put down a sacrifice bunt before an RBI groundout from Adam Riley cut the CU lead in half.
The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the second, starting with the solo homer from Veras. Urquhart and Hall both singled and stole bases and Monson’s two-run single to the left side put Cumberland ahead, 5-1.
The wheels came off for Treadwell in the third, an inning that started with an error by Veras and a walk. Treadwell got the next two batters out, but Vaughan reached on another Veras miscue, which allowed two runs to score, and Manney followed with a two-run homer down the leftfield line, tying the game at five. Adams then doubled and scored on Riley’s single up the middle, ending the day for Treadwell.
Cumberland scored three more times in the bottom of the inning to re-take the lead for good.
Tyler Anderson walked and Richie Seaton singled to leadoff before a two-run double to leftcenter from Alford. Veras plated a run with a single to rightcenter for an 8-6 advantage.
In the fourth Micah Rainwater and Zack McCarthy had a pinch-hit single for the Cougars. With two outs Manney reached on Veras’ third error of the game, making it a one-run contest.
The Bulldogs responded with seven runs on seven hits in the fifth, sending 12 batters to the plate.
Veras singled with one out and Urquhart walked before a single by Hall loaded the bases. Monson and Brodie Ross each had RBI singles and Harrison’s single to right plated two runs. Seaton was hit with two outs, setting up Alford’s two-run single through the right side for a 15-7 lead.
In the sixth pinch-hitter Nolan Gray singled and Ross walked before a two-out RBI single from Anderson.
CU ended the game with a run in the eighth – singles from Ross and Harrison before Anderson was hit, loading the bases. Seaton’s single to rightcenter plated the final run to invoke the run rule for the game.
Cumberland hosts long-time rival Trevecca Nazarene on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium and concludes the regular season this weekend, taking on Bluefield College in a three-game series at home starting Friday.
