Starting pitching leads series sweep

LEBANON, Tenn. – Anthony Gomez and Jake Collier combined to allow just two runs on 10 hits in 16 innings and Brodie Ross posted a pair of two-run doubles and five RBIs in 14th-ranked Cumberland’s 5-1 and 4-1 victories over No. 21 Campbellsville University on Saturday, completing a three-game sweep at HIG Field in Campbellsville, Ky.

The Bulldogs (29-13-1, 13-2 Mid-South) won the opening game of the series, 5-3, on Friday, and now holds a four-game lead with six contests to play in Mid-South action. CU plays its final two series at home, facing UVA-Wise and Bluefield College.

Gomez (8-0) remained perfect on the season with his fourth complete game of the year in the opener, scattering six hits and giving up one run with three walks and five strikeouts. The Tigers (23-11, 9-6) plated a run in the first inning and then had just seven baserunners the rest of the contest, including only one over the final three frames.

Bret DeRooy (2-3) took the loss for Campbellsville, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.

Tyler Anderson and Daniel Harrison each had run-scoring singles after a sacrifice fly from Ross in the third inning. Ross added a two-run double in the seventh, as the Bulldogs plated two insurance runs. Cory Urquhart posted two hits and scored twice in the win as well.

Craig Monson’s RBI groundout and a two-run double from Ross put the Bulldogs up, 3-0, in the third inning of the second half. Monson’s RBI triple in the seventh provided an insurance run for Collier, who was making his first start on the mound since March 16.

Campbellsville had a walk in the second inning, collected two singles and scored a run in the third, collected a single and a walk in the sixth and registered a leadoff double in the seventh. It was Collier’s longest outing since tossing nine innings at Faulkner University on February 19 and he was helped by 11 ground ball outs in the win.

Patrick McMeel (3-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits with six strikeouts in four innings of work.

Tanner Nielsen led off the bottom of the first in the opener with a single for the Tigers, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jacob Phillips and scored on a two-out single up the middle from McMeel.

Cumberland took the lead in the third when Justin Johnston, Urquhart and Monson all singled, loading the bases, before the sac fly from Ross tied the contest. Anderson and Harrison followed with RBI singles for a 3-1 CU advantage.

In the bottom of the inning Phillips singled with two outs and Keaton Neeb walked, but Phillips was thrown out trying to steal third to end the inning. Only one other player reached second base the rest of the game for Campbellsville – a leadoff double by Michael Bush in the seventh – but he was stranded at third after a strikeouts and a pair of groundouts.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the seventh, starting with a leadoff single by Urquhart. Chris Hall bunted the runner to second and Monson reached on an infield single before Ross’ two-run double to leftcenter put Cumberland ahead, 5-1.

CU scored three times in the third inning to take an early lead in the second game.

Johnston struck out but reached on a passed ball and then went to second on another passed ball. Urquhart reached on a bunt single and Hall was hit, loading the bases, before an RBI groundout by Monson. Ross’ second double of the day plated both runners for a 3-0 Bulldog lead.

The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, starting with one-out singles from Shane Woodson and Nielsen. Woodson came across later in the inning after a strikeout by Bush, cutting the Bulldog advantage to 3-1.

In the seventh Urquhart walked with one out and scored on Monson’s two-out triple to right for the final run of the game.

Angelo Simmons doubled with one out in the seventh for Campbellsville, but was stranded at third after the final two groundouts of the game.

Cumberland plays at Bethel University on Tuesday at 2 p.m., ending an 11-game road swing. The Bulldogs return home April 12-13 with a three-game series versus UVA-Wise at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
