Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Hunter Bartlett went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Mitch Rainer tossed a career-best seven innings, as 14th-ranked Cumberland used three big innings en route to a 12-5 victory over Bethel University on Tuesday afternoon in McKenzie, Tenn.
Bartlett doubled home a run in the fourth and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Cory Urquhart. Bartlett singled and scored in the fifth and seventh as well, the first three-hit game of the season for the backup catcher.
Rainer (1-1) scattered 10 hits over seven innings, giving up three runs with one walk and three strikeouts. After giving up a run after two batters in the first inning, the righthander retired 16 of the next 20 batters, working around an error in the second, a leadoff double in the fourth and a single and a hit batter in the fifth.
Jesse Coe tossed a perfect inning and Kevin P. Greene gave up two solo homers in the ninth to finish off the game for CU.
Urquhart drove in three runs in the game while Justin Johnston and Craig Monson each had two RBIs, including a solo homer in the first for Monson. Chris Hall, Daniel Harrison, Richie Seaton and Johnston all collected two hits for the Bulldogs (30-13-1) and Anderson, Seaton and Johnston each scored twice.
Bethel starter Hayden Smith (1-2) allowed eight runs, five earned, on 11 hits in five innings for the Wildcats (18-12).
After Monson’s homer in the first, Brian Ferrell led off the bottom of the inning and Tyler Roberson followed with an RBI single to leftcenter, tying the game at four.
Cumberland broke open the contest with four runs in the fourth, starting with a leadoff single from Harrison and a double by Anderson. Seaton followed with an RBI single before a run-scoring double from Bartlett.
Johnston drove home a run with a single as well and Urquhart’s sac fly gave the Bulldogs a 5-1 advantage.
CU took advantage of a Wildcats error to plate three more runs in the fifth.
Anderson reached on an error by third baseman Martin Key with one out and Bartlett singled with two outs before an RBI single from Johnston. Johnston stole second, setting up Urquhart’s two-run single for an 8-1 lead.
In the sixth BU’s Michael Brasili tripled with one out and scored on Celtic Rush’s single, but Cumberland answered with three more runs in the seventh.
Anderson drew a leadoff walk from Bethel reliever Brandon Baggett and Bartlett singled with one out. Johnston also walked, loading the bases, and Hall walked with two outs, forcing in a run. Monson was hit and Ross also drew a free pass, pushing across two more runs for an 11-2 Bulldog advantage.
Bethel came back with a run in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff walk to Roberson. Lance Jarreld singled before an RBI single by Tyler Murphy.
In the ninth Hall singled with one out and Ross doubled with two outs before an RBI single from Harrison.
Ferrell and Murphy both hit solo homers for the Wildcats in the ninth.
Cumberland returns home for the first time since March 23 this weekend for a three-game series against UVA-Wise. Friday’s single game starts at 2 p.m. and Saturday’s doubleheader begins at Noon.
