Box Score JOLIET, Ill. – Judson University’s Josh Raymond led off the 10th inning with a single and Mark DeYoung followed with an RBI double, plating the winning run for a 4-3 victory over 13th-ranked Cumberland in an elimination game here Saturday morning in the NAIA Championship Opening Round at Silver Cross Field.
Cumberland’s season ends with the loss, dropping a pair of games to Judson in the tournament and all three contests against the Eagles this season. Brodie Ross’ two-out, two-strike single in the ninth scored Cory Urquhart with the tying run, sending it to extra innings.
Raymond scorched a single past a diving Urquhart to start the bottom of the 10th and DeYoung followed with a double into deep left-centerfield. Judson head coach Rich Benjamin never hesitated at third, sending Raymond to the plate. The relay throw from Urquhart arrived at just the same time as the runner, but catcher Tyler Alford was unable to hang on to the ball as he tried to tag the runner, allowing the winning run to score.
Cumberland (41-19-1) stranded 11 baserunners in the game – two each in the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth innings – and finished the game just 3-of-10 with runners in scoring position. Kevin P. Greene (4-3) suffered the tough-luck loss in five-plus innings of relief, allowing one run on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. CU starter Jake Collier gave up three runs on five hits in four innings.
Judson’s Ryan Kendall (3-2) picked up the win with one perfect inning of work. Eagles starter Andrew Bergmann allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings, while Ryan Perez gave up one run on five hits in three innings, including Ross’ game-tying single.
Ross finished 3-for-4 with a walk and one RBI in the contest, while Cory Urquhart had two hits and scored twice. Craig Monson plated CU’s first two runs with a two-run double in the fifth inning.
The Eagles (46-16) started fast again against CU, just as they did in the tournament opener for both teams, plating two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.
Johnny Amann led off the first inning with a walk and three straight singles from Tony Rallo, Josh Raymond and DeYoung, the last one hitting Collier in the foot and bouncing into shallow left-centerfield.
Amann scored on Raymond’s single to center and Rallo came across on DeYoung’s shot off Collier for a quick 2-0 Judson advantage. A hard grounder up the middle that turned into a doubleplay put an end to the frame, but not before the damage was done.
Rallo’s solo homer to rightfield, his fourth of the season, gave the Eagles a 3-0 edge in the third inning.
Greene shut down the Eagles once he came into the game, giving up a single and two walks in three innings before getting out of a jam in both the eighth and ninth innings.
The Bulldogs got back into the game in the fifth inning after a leadoff single from Tyler Alford. Urquhart singled to center with one out and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. With two outs Monson blooped a double into short leftcenter, just out of the reach of a diving Ryan Burke, scoring two runs and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
Cumberland had a chance to tie the contest in the eighth after Ross led off with a single and Tyler Anderson reached on a bad hop single with one out, but Josciel Veras struck out swinging and Alford grounded to first to end the threat.
The Eagles looked at add to the lead in the bottom of the inning when Rallo blooped a double down the leftfield line with one out. With two outs DeYoung was intentionally and Burke worked another free pass, loading the bases. Pinch-hitter Craig Lipp fisted a 2-0 pitch toward second base, but Veras made a phenomenal diving catch in short centerfield, saving two runs and giving the Bulldogs a chance to tie the contest.
CU did just that in the ninth, starting with a one-out walk to Urquhart. Seaton bounced an 0-2 pitch up the middle that caromed off the glove of second baseman Brian Brauer into centerfield. Urquhart made it all the way to third on the play, but Monson struck out, leaving everything up to Ross. He fouled off two pitches before smacking an 0-2 curveball into leftfield.
In the bottom of the inning, Luke Rojas singled to center with one out and Cameron Balough singled to left with two outs, but Rallo, who finished the game with three hits, bounced out to first to end the threat.
