LEBANON, Tenn. – Sam Lind’s RBI triple tied the game and Ricky Coleman followed with a run-scoring single, as 10th-ranked Cumberland scored twice in the ninth to take a 6-5 victory over No. 23 Georgetown College on Friday in the Mid-South Conference series opener at Robert N. Wilson Field in Georgetown, Ky.

The Bulldogs (10-4, 1-0 Mid-South) had an early lead and were ahead, 4-2, when Georgetown plated three runs in the seventh inning, taking advantage of a Lind error on a ball that looked to be a doubleplay. Duran Elmore’s two-run triple gave the Tigers a 5-4 edge before CU’s comeback in the ninth.

Chris Hall started the rally with a one-out single to rightcenter, his third hit of the game, and Justin Byrd followed with a single down the rightfield line, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Lind made up for his earlier mistake with a triple to center and Coleman followed with a single to center. Coleman collected three hits as well for CU, which pounded out 14 hits but stranded eight baserunners in the victory.

Stevie Smith (3-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing one hit with four strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Cumberland starter Anthony Gomez set a career-high with 12 strikeouts but gave up four earned runs in 6.1 innings with three walks.

Georgetown’s Edwin Santiago (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in the ninth inning. GC starter Shaun Meyer lasted 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.

The Bulldogs got on the board first with a run in the second inning after a leadoff single from Ricky Coleman. He went to second on a balk and third on a groundout from Brady North before Tyler Anderson’s RBI single through the leftside.

The Tigers took advantage of a pair of walks in the third to take the lead to take the lead.

Tanner Unkel drew a leadoff free pass and went to second on a wild pitch with one out. Duran Elmore also walked, albeit on a check swing on the full count pitch, and Tyler Coker’s double to leftcenter plating both runners for a 2-1 Georgetown edge.

Cumberland tied the contest in the fifth when Josciel Veras singled to rightfield with one out and went to second on Tyler Alford’s groundout. He scored on Chris Hall’s two-out single to left, knotting the score at two.

In the second North doubled to right to leadoff and Anderson followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Richie Seaton then singled to right, scoring one run, and rightfielder Coker booted the ball, allowing the runners to move up to second and third. Alford’s groundout gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 advantage.

Georgetown took advantage of a big error by the Bulldogs to take the lead with three runs in the seventh.

Steven Mancilla doubled to leadoff the seventh and Unkel followed with a walk. David Higuera bounced to second for what looked to be a doubleplay, but the ball went between the legs of Sam Lind and into rightfield, allowing a run to score. Both runners moved up on the throw to third before a two-run triple down the rightfield line by Elmore, ending the day for Gomez and giving the Tigers a 5-4 lead.

Cumberland and Georgetown play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Central Time.
