CU walks off versus Missouri Baptist

Box Score

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior Richie Seaton delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly with one out in the seventh inning as the Cumberland baseball team overcame a one-run deficit in its final at-bat to outlast Missouri Baptist on Saturday at Harrison Field on the campus of Faulkner University.

Junior Justin Byrd collected three hits and scored a pair of runs in the victory and redshirt senior Ricky Coleman went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.

After surrendering a one-run lead during a two-run top of the seventh, CU (2-1), acting as the home team at the neutral site, returned the favor in the bottom of the inning.

Byrd began the rally with a double down the right field line, and redshirt senior Sam Lind singled to left. Coleman tied the game with a ground ball to the first baseman, which kicked away leaving runners on first and second. Following a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Seaton came through with the game-ending hit.

The Bulldogs conducted a two-out rally in the bottom of the second. After a double-play cleared the bases, Tyler Anderson drew a walk and Seaton continued his hot start with a single. Josciel Veras completed the damage with a double to right-center field to bring home both runners and give CU a 2-0 advantage.

The two-out lightning struck again in the third inning as Ricky Coleman doubled home Justin Byrd, who reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Missouri Baptist responded immediately in the top of the fourth, as Pier Oliver-Dostaler singled with two away and the bases loaded to cut the Spartans’ deficit to 3-2.

The score remained as such until the top of the seventh inning, as Missouri Baptist took its first lead of the contest. After a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt, Joseph Stropp delivered a sac fly to right field to tie the game. An error at shortstop plated a second run to give the Spartans a 4-3 advantage.

Junior Stevie Smith (1-0) grabbed the victory on the bump in two innings of relief work. Junior Clint Meadows started the contest, scattering five hits in five innings and allowing a pair of runs.

The Bulldogs will play a second contest Saturday against No. 1 Faulkner University, set to begin at 5 p.m.
