LEBANON, Tenn. – Josh Beams doubled twice, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice and Marcus Howard scored three times, as Indiana University Southeast defeated No. 1 Cumberland, 15-9, in a three-plus hour seven-inning game Sunday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The second game of the doubleheader was called because of poor field conditions and approaching darkness after four complete innings and thus was not an official game. IUS was leading in that contest as well, 7-3.

The Grenadiers (4-2) scored three times in the first and second innings, four runs in the fourth and then five times in the sixth after the Bulldogs had pulled within a run thanks to a two-run homer from Kyle Allen and a grand slam by Timothy Smith. Cumberland (1-10) used 22 position players and five pitchers in the contest while committing six errors, walking four and hitting three others.

Brian Nacke (2-0), the last of six IUS hurlers, got the win, tossing 2.1 shutout innings with three walks and two strikeouts. It marked his second victory of the series after throwing one inning in the 2-0 IUS win on Saturday. The six Grenadiers pitchers walked 11 batters, which allowed Cumberland to get back in the contest with a seven-run fifth inning.

CU starter Cameron Lenz (0-2) got just one out and suffered the loss, allowing three runs on three hits. Austin Woodfin worked innings of relief, giving up seven runs, two earned, on seven hits.

Howard started the contest with a double to rightcenter and Beams reached on a bunt single before an RBI groundout from Trent Simpson. Logan Coughlin’s double to rightcenter plated Beams and ended the day for Lenz after just four batters.

Tyler Adams also reached on a bunt single down the third base line, putting runners on the corners, and a bad pickoff throw from Woodfin allowed another run to come across.

The Grenadiers added three unearned runs in the second, with Alex Dapkus reaching on an errant throw from CU shortstop Hector Viera. Dapkus went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Dayton Rausch’s single through the right side.

Howard followed with his own single to right and the bases were loaded after another bunt from Beams, this one after a bad throw from third baseman Ryan Simmons. Simpson’s slow grounder to short scored Rausch and a two-out single to center by Adams gave the visitors a 6-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Tyler Alford and Ryan Simmons both walked to start the frame and pinch-runner Zach Cole and Simmons moved up on a deep fly ball to center by Viera. Cole later scored on a wild pitch.

In the third Phil Stiles walked with one out and went to second on a wild pitch before a two-out double off the base of the leftfield wall from Alford, scoring Stiles and ending the day for IUS starter Mark Downs.

Beams started the fourth inning with a double down the leftfield line for IUS and Simpson reached on a chopper down the third base line that Simmons tried the let go foul but it did not. Adams lined to center with one out but Justin Byrd misplayed the ball, loading the bases, and Jarret Young was hit, forcing in a run. Chris Kemp then doubled into leftcenter, clearing the bases for a 10-2 Grenadiers lead.

The Bulldogs got back into the game thanks to a seven-run fifth inning that included five walks and two home runs.

Dakota Byrd drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a bad pickoff throw and third on a groundout by Eddie McDaniels. He scored on a balk, but that was before the merry-go-round really started.

Zach Cole also drew a free pass before Kyle Allen belted a two-run homer to deep leftcenter, cutting the deficit to 10-5.

Jarrett Plunkett then doubled to deep right, off the glove of Dapkus near the wall, and Taylor Dorsey and Brandon Bowe both drew free passes, loading the bases for Timothy Smith, who drilled a 2-0 pitch from Shane Weedman over the wall in leftfield for a grand slam, cutting the IUS advantage to 10-9.

Unfortunately for CU, the Grenadiers responded with five runs in the sixth for the final runs of the contest.

Young reached on an error by Viera and Kemp walked before the fourth bunt single of the game by the Grenadiers, this one from Dapkus, loaded the bases. Rausch and Howard both walked, forcing in runs. Beams then doubled down the leftfield line, scoring two more runs, and Coughlin’s sac fly to right plated the final run for IUS.

Cumberland is scheduled to play at Union University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and hosts Culver-Stockton in a three-game series next weekend.
