Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Matt Young and Miguel Gonzalez combined for a four-hit shutout in the opener and 16th-ranked Oklahoma City scored five runs in the sixth to break open the second game in a doubleheader sweep, 2-0 and 13-7, over Cumberland on Tuesday in baseball action in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Bulldogs (3-13) stranded seven runners in the opener, including five in scoring position, wasting another good effort on the mound from Stevie Smith (1-2), who allowed two runs on just five hits in six innings. The righthander walked four and struck out five, but was outdueled by Young and Gonzalez.
Young (2-0) gave up all four hits, walked four and struck out seven in 5.2 innings before Gonzalez picked up his second save of the year with 1.1 hitless frames, striking out three.
Phil Stiles went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, Hector Viera added two hits and two RBIs and Bronson Bowe also drove in a pair of runs in the second contest, but J.J. Bissell’s two-run single highlighted the five-run sixth inning that broke open a one-run game for the Stars (14-5).
CU starter Andrew Woodfin (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on six hits in two-plus innings. OCY starter Skylar Janisse didn’t fare much better, giving up five runs on five hits in 2.2 innings, but reliever Holden Lyons (3-0) got the win with 2.1 frames, allowing one run on two hits.
In the opener, Justin Byrd drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and Stiles followed with a single before a sacrifice bunt by Viera put runners on second and third, but Ryan Dickison and Tyler Alford both struck out to end the threat.
The Stars plated a run in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff triple from Reggie Wilson. He scored on a groundout by Joe Lytle for a 1-0 OCU edge.
In the second OCU’s Ryan Wright singled with one out and stole second before a walks to Bissell and Josh Halbert loaded the bases. Another free pass, this one to Adam Clark, forced in a run, but Smith induced a 3-2-3 inning-ending doubleplay from Wilson to minimize the damage.
Byrd and Stiles led off the CU third inning with singles and moved to second and third on a groundout by Dickison before being stranded there.
Eddie McDaniels and Stiles both had walks in the fifth inning, but McDaniels was erased on a doubleplay. Dickison also doubled to start the sixth and went to third on Richard Carter’s groundout, but Gonzalez came in to strikeout Conor Dishman to end the inning.
Smith worked around a double and a hit batter in the third inning before retiring nine of the last 11 batters he faced.
Oklahoma City plated three runs in the first inning of the second game after a one-out double from Lytle and an RBI single up the middle by Jared Baker. Dylan Delso then walked and Bissell’s two-out double gave the home team a 3-0 lead after an inning.
Cumberland broke loose for five runs in the third inning, chasing Janisse from the contest.
Byrd was hit with one out and Stiles singled to left before an RBI single to right by Viera. With two outs Alford walked, loading the bases, and Kyle Allen also drew a free pass, forcing in a run. Bowe’s single to left pushed across two more runs and Jarrett Plunkett reached on an error by OCU shortstop Halbert before a bases loaded walk to Orlando Collado forced in the final run of the inning.
The lead didn’t last long, though, with the Stars answering with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good and end the day for Woodfin.
Lytle singled and Baker homered to rightcenter, tying the contest at five. Delso then singled to right, finishing the day for Woodfin in favor of Jackson White, who got two quick outs before a walk to Halbert and a single to right by Joe Haddox. One run scored on the play and another came across on an error by Dickison for a 7-5 OCU advantage.
Cumberland got a run back in the fourth when Stiles and Dickison both singled and Stiles scored on a sacrifice fly from Alford.
Oklahoma City stretched the lead back to two in the fifth with a one-out double from Bissell and a two-out single to right by Haddox for an 8-6 lead.
Again the Bulldogs answered, this time with Byrd singling up the middle with one out in the sixth before a two-out double to right by Viera, pulling CU within a run.
OCU put the game away with the five-run bottom of the sixth, starting with a one-out bunt single by Lytle. He went all the way to third on a bad pickoff throw and after Baker was intentionally walked, Adonis Askew singled to left, plating a run.
Connor Lynch was hit, loading the bases, and Bissell’s followed with a two-run single. Back-to-back free passes to Halbert and Haddox forced in another run and Spenser Gill was hit later in the inning, pushing across the final run of the game.
Cumberland is scheduled to take on Bacone College on Wednesday in a single game at 1 p.m. before returning to Tennessee.
