Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – Freshman Curtis Hoppe allowed just three hits and struck out 11 in a complete game and Justin Byrd, Phil Stiles and Ryan Dickison each drove in two runs, leading Cumberland to a 9-1 second game victory and a split of the doubleheader Wednesday at Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla.
Hoppe (1-1), the freshman from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., made his first of the season and took advantage of the opportunity, giving up one run while walking just two in seven innings. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the second inning to give the righthander some breathing room and added four more runs in the sixth.
Hoppe retired the first 11 batters of the game before a two-out single and walk for the Warriors in the fourth. He got the next five hitters out and gave up a walk in the sixth but erased Tanner Vernon with a 6-3 doubleplay to end the inning.
Cumberland pounded out 13 hits in the win, including three from Richard Carter and two apiece by Byrd, Stiles and Conor Dishman. Carter also scored three times in the contest and Eddie McDaniels scored twice.
Bacone’s John Luc Tourville (1-2) took the loss, giving up eight runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings.
Cumberland (4-14) scored three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to take a one-run lead in the opening game of the twinbill, including home runs from Tyler Alford and Stiles, but the Warriors (7-12) scored twice in the seventh for a 7-6 victory.
Cumberland scored twice in the first inning to take an early lead in the first game of the doubleheader, with Byrd leading off the game with a single before a walk to Stiles. The runners moved up on a bad pickoff throw and both scored on Hector Viera’s double down the leftfield line.
Bacone knotted the game in the third when Ronnie Galindo singled with two outs and Sean Baumes followed with a two-run homer to right, his fourth of the season.
In the fourth Derek Sullivan reached on a one-out error by CU third baseman Ryan Simmons, Reno Smith singled and Tanner Lessing walked, loading the bases. Zach Bean’s single to right plated two runs for a 4-2 Bacone advantage.
The Bulldogs scored three times in the fifth to retake the lead, starting with a one-out triple from Viera before Alford belted his first home run of the year. Timothy Smith then singled and came across on Dishman’s double to left for a 5-4 CU edge.
The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the inning, with Baumes doubling with one out. Ryan Wagner singled through the left side, putting runners on the corners, and Kyle Schoonover’s groundout plated Baumes, knotting the game at five.
Stiles’ two-out solo home run in the sixth put the Bulldogs back ahead again, but not before Bacone’s two-run rally in the seventh for the win.
Baumes drew a leadoff walk and Wagner singled up the middle to start the frame. Schoonover also singled, loading the bases, before Sullivan’s groundout tied the contest at six. With two outs Lessing’s single to rightcenter plated pinch-runner Kevin Cherestal with the game-winning run.
CU starter Jake Collier (1-2) went the distance, allowing seven runs on 13 hits. The righthander walked two and struck out four, working in-and-out of trouble in every inning.
Schoonover tossed five innings in the start for Bacone, giving up five runs on eight hits. Trevor Wallace (2-0) worked the final two innings for the win, allowing one run on two hits.

Dishman and Carter had back-to-back doubles to start the frame and McDaniels singled with one outs, putting runners on the corners. Byrd’s single plated a run and Stiles followed with an RBI double before a sacrifice fly by Viera made it 4-0 Bulldogs.
CU had just three baserunners against Tourville over the next three innings before chasing him from the contest in the sixth.
Carter led off with a triple and scored on McDaniels’ bunt single. With two outs Stiles singled to left, plating McDaniels, before Viera and Alford were both hit, loading the bases and ending the day for Tourville. Dickison’s two-run single to left pushed the lead to 8-0 for Cumberland.
Carter started the seventh with a single and Simmons followed with his first hit of the game but McDaniels bounced into a doubleplay. Byrd’s two-out double down the rightfield line scored the final run of the game for the Bulldogs.
Baumes led off the bottom of the seventh with a double for Bacone but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Two batters later Schoonover hit a solo homer to right for the Warriors only run of the contest.
Cumberland is scheduled to open Mid-South Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at the University of the Cumberlands.
