Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. – John Werner tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and Francisco Gonzalez and Tyler Devine each drove in a pair of runs in the second game, as St. Catharine swept a doubleheader from Cumberland, 3-0 and 6-3, on Saturday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
The Bulldogs (6-17, 2-3 Mid-South) collected just eight hits and stranded eight baserunners combined in the twinbill. Werner and Steven Borkowski walked three and hit batters in their two complete-game efforts while the Patriots (15-6, 5-0) did not commit an error in the two games, giving Cumberland very few chances to score.
Werner (6-1) walked one, hit a batter and struck out six in his nine-inning complete game. The Bulldogs managed just one baserunner through the first six innings against the righthander, a third inning single from Richard Carter.
Hector Viera walked and Ryan Dickison singled with one out in the seventh and Viera reached third after a flyout from Tyler Alford, the only runner to get to third base in the game for CU.
Werner’s brilliance overshadowed eight strong innings from CU’s Stevie Smith. The senior gave up three runs on five hits with five walks and six strikeouts in eight innings. He retired nine of the last 12 he faced and St. Catharine had just six baserunners in his final five innings of work.
Devine’s two-run homer capped a three-run fourth inning for the Patriots in the second game, giving SCC a 4-1 advantage. Gonzalez singled home a run before Devine’a two-run shot in the fourth and plated one of two St. Catharine insurance runs in the eighth with a double in the 6-3 victory.
After Cumberland pulled within 4-3, Borkowski gave up a leadoff single to Justin Byrd in the fifth but later picked him off. Borkowski (3-2) set down the final eight hitters of the game, with five of his seven strikeouts in the sixth and seventh innings. He allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and hit one batter.
CU starter Jake Collier suffered the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts in four innings.
Drew Kissel led off the opener with a single to center for SCC and moved to second on Alfredo Bohorquez’s sacrifice bunt. Harold Diaz was hit with one out and the runners went to second and third on Domonique Guevera’s groundout. Santiago Arce followed with a two-run single through the leftside for an early lead for the Patriots.
Bohorquez homered to right with two outs in the third for St. Catharine’s only other run of the game.
The Patriots nearly added to the lead in the fifth when Lamont Calloway walked and Josh Wenning singled with one out. Kissel struck out, but after a double steal put the runners at second and third, Bohorquez was intentionally walked. Diaz lined out to center to end the inning.
Cumberland got on the board in the first inning of the second game after Byrd was hit and Phil Stiles singled to left to start the frame. Viera moved the runners to second and third with a sac bunt and Dickison’s deep fly ball to rightcenter plated Byrd for an early lead.
The Patriots knotted the score in the third when Wenning and Kissel both singled with one out. With two outs they executed the double steal and Wenning came across after Alford’s throw sailed into leftfield.
In the fourth Arce doubled to right with one out and Gonzalez followed with an RBI single down the leftfield line. Devine then homered to leftcenter, giving SCC a 4-1 advantage.
Dickison led off the bottom of the inning with his second home run of the year, making it a two-run game. Alford followed with a walk and pinch-runner Zach Cole went to second on a sac bunt from Jonathan Larson. Conor Dishman singled to center with two outs, plating Cole and cutting the deficit to one.
St. Catharine tried to add to the lead in the sixth after a single from Devine and a double by Carlos Cespedes, but Byrd came on in relief to get a popout and a flyout to end the threat.
The Patriots broke through against Byrd in the seventh, starting with a one-out walk to Diaz, who stole second and scored on Guevera’s single to right. Gonzalez doubled to rightcenter with two outs, plating Guevera with the last of two insurance runs for the visitors.
The two teams conclude their series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs play four times on the road next week, starting Monday at Bryan College at 4 p.m. Central Time.
