Four-run eighth helps CU salvage final game of series

Box Score

LEBANON, Tenn. – Ryan Dickison’s two-run homer in the seventh tied the game and Cumberland plated four more runs in the eighth, two on wild pitches, to salvage the final contest in a three-game series with St. Catharine College, 7-3, on Sunday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

The Bulldogs (7-17, 3-3 Mid-South) managed only two hits through six innings against SCC starter Daniel Lerma before a leadoff single by Hector Viera preceded Dickison’s third homer of the season and second in two games, knotting the score at three.

Singles by Ryan Simmons and Justin Byrd along with a hit by pitch of Phil Stiles loaded the bases for CU in the eighth. Viera’s sacrifice fly plated one run and two others came across on wild pitches, both from James Davenport, before an RBI single up the middle by Tyler Alford gave Cumberland a 7-3 lead.

Byrd hit a solo homer to start the first inning for CU and also doubled in the third. Lerma retired the other 18 batters through the first six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. Jonathan Larson also singled against the righthander later in the seventh for the Bulldogs.

Clint Meadows made his first appearance since March 14, tossing seven strong innings. The righthander allowed three unearned runs on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. The senior missed five weeks with an oblique strain and worked around 10 baserunners in the contest as well as a pair of errors by the CU defense.

Stephen Fischer (2-5) worked the final two innings for the victory, giving up two singles but nothing else.

Derek Jones (0-1), the second of three SCC hurlers, took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits without getting an out.

Byrd finished 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI for Cumberland. Francisco Gonzalez and Josh Wenning each posted two hits for the Patriots (15-7, 5-1).

St. Catharine scored a pair of unearned runs in the second after one-out singles from Santiago Arce and Gonzalez. Tyler Devine’s grounder to third turned into a two-base error and both runners came across on the play for a 2-1 SCC edge.

The Patriots added another unearned run in the sixth when Harold Diaz led off with a double and Arce reached on an error by Byrd in centerfield. Gonzalez followed with a sac fly, making it 3-1 for the visitors.

Cumberland plays at Bryan College on Monday at 4 p.m. Central Time and begins a three-game series at Shawnee State on Friday at 3 p.m. CT.
