Box Score LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland scored twice in the top of the ninth to take the lead, but Shawnee State plated single runs in the ninth and 10th to pull out a 3-2 victory over the Bulldogs in baseball action Friday afternoon in Portsmouth, Ohio.
The Bulldogs and Bears finish the three-game series with an 11 a.m. Central Time doubleheader on Saturday at Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth.
Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision despite exemplary outings, with Cumberland’s Stevie Smith allowed one earned run on six hits in nine innings. He walked one and struck out seven.
SSU’s Derek Moore gave up two runs while scattering nine hits. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. The righthander retired 12 of the first 13 CU batters before working around a pair of singles in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bulldogs (7-19, 3-4 Mid-South) finally broke through in the ninth with consecutive doubles from Tyler Alford and Ryan Dickison putting runners on second and third with no outs. Conor Dishman plated pinch-runner Orlando Collado with a sacrifice fly and Ryan Simmons’ single through the leftside scored Dickison for a 2-1 CU advantage.
The Bears (9-15, 4-3) took an early lead with a leadoff single in the first by Mitchell Lendenski before an RBI double from Blake Maines. Smith retired 22 of the next 27 hitters for SSU, getting a pair of doubleplays and working around an error as well.
After Cumberland took the lead in the top of the ninth, Mauro Olivarria started the bottom of the inning with a single down the leftfield line. With one out Dalton Tinsley reached on an error by Dickison in rightfield. Matt Dvorscak scored on the play, sending the contest to extra innings.
Adam Turner was hit to leadoff the bottom of the 10th and Travis Bingham moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. Pinch-runner Joe Wallen went to third on a fly ball by pinch-hitter Drew Haislop and scored on Lendenski’s single through the left side for the 3-2 Bears victory.
Brandon Bonar (2-0) allowed one hit in one inning of work for the win while Curtis Hoppe (1-2) took the loss, giving up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Phil Stiles, Alford, Dickison and Simmons each collected two hits for the Bulldogs while Lendenski and Tinsley both had two hits for Shawnee State.
