LEBANON, Tenn. – Clint Meadows allowed one earned run on six hits in a complete game, Ryan Simmons posted three hits and Phil Stiles drove in a pair of runs in a 4-2 Cumberland victory in baseball action Saturday over Shawnee State at Branch Rickey Park in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The Bulldogs (8-20, 4-5 Mid-South) dropped the second game of the doubleheader, 1-0, on Connor Wilson’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.

Meadows (1-0) walked three and retired 11 of the first 13 batters of the game before two walks, a single and a sacrifice fly tied the game in the fifth. The Bears got an unearned run in the eighth with the help of an error and two wild pitches.

Simmons singled in the second, fourth and eighth innings, scoring Jonathan Larson in the fourth. Both of Stiles’ RBIs came via the sacrifice fly while Tyler Alford collected two hits and Justin Byrd scored twice in the win.

Cumberland stranded seven runners in the first four innings of the second contest, including the bases loaded in the second. Byrd was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the game but was part of two doubleplays to end innings.

Jake Collier (2-4) got the tough-luck loss for the Bulldogs, scattering six hits and giving up an unearned run in 6.1 innings. He walked four and struck out six. The Bears left the bases loaded in the fourth and two runners on base in the second and sixth innings before finally breaking through in the seventh thanks to a pair of misplayed bunts.

Cumberland got the lead in the opener with a run in the fourth after Larson was hit to leadoff and Kyle Allen walked. A single up the middle by Simmons plated the run for CU.

The Bears (10-16, 5-4) answered in the fifth thanks to walks to Mauro Olivarria and Dalton Tinsley with a single in-between from Mason Wisner. Adam Turner’s sacrifice fly knotted the game at one.

In the seventh Jarrett Plunkett drew a leadoff walk for the Bulldogs and Byrd singled with one out. Plunkett later scored on a throwing error by the second baseman Olivarria and after a wild pitch allowed Byrd to reach third, Stiles drove him in with the first of his two sac flies.

Matt Dvorscak reached on an error by the shortstop Stiles to start the eighth for SSU. He reached third on a pair of wild pitches and scored on a two-out infield single by Olivarria.

The Bulldogs got an insurance run in the ninth thanks to Byrd, who walked with one out, stole second and took third on a bad pickoff throw. Stiles’ second sacrifice fly plated the final run of the game.

Shawnee State starter Cody Strayer (1-3) took the loss, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits in seven innings. He walked five and struck out three.

In the second game Byrd led off the game with a double and Stiles was hit, but Alford struck out and Ryan Dickison bounced into a doubleplay to end the inning. Two-out singles from Simmons, Plunkett and Eddie McDaniels loaded the bases in the second before a pop-out by Byrd ended that threat.

Kyle Allen and Plunkett each had singles in the fourth as well for CU, but McDaniels flied out to end that frame, with CU stranding seven runners in the first four innings.

Collier worked trouble in almost every inning, including a walk and an error in the second and a single and two walks (one intentional) in the fourth.

Wilson doubled to start the Bears sixth inning but was tagged out at third on a bunt by Chase Clary. Wisner then walked but a pop-out and a groundout ended the threat.

Pinch-hitter Andrew Vanthournout started the seventh inning for SSU with a single and got to second when Simmons dropped the throw to second on a bunt from Mitchell Ledenski. Dvorscak loaded the bases with a bunt single, but Collier struck out Blake Maines for the first out.

Wilson followed with the walk-off single through the left side, scoring Vanthournout with the only run of the game.

Cumberland hosts Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Lindenwood University-Belleville on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
