Three-run sixth carries Tennessee Wesleyan to 6-4 win

LEBANON, Tenn. – Tyler Albert posted two hits with a double and three RBIs and 13th-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan scored three times in the seventh to regain the lead en route to a 6-4 victory over Cumberland in baseball action Tuesday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.

Albert’s two-run double in the fifth put Tennessee Wesleyan (26-8) ahead, 3-1, but the Bulldogs (8-21) knotted the score with an RBI single from Hectoe Viera and an RBI groundout by Jonathan Larson in the bottom of the inning.

Albert’s run-scoring single in the seventh put Wesleyan ahead for good and Brad Carpenter and Wardy Polanco added RBI singles later in the inning for a 6-3 advantage.

Cumberland plated an unearned run in the ninth and had the tying runs on base before Tyler Alford’s groundout to end the contest.

Justin Byrd was 4-for-5 and scored twice for the Bulldogs and Viera posted two hits, but CU stranded 10 runners on base, including two apiece in the third, fifth and ninth innings.

Polanco collected three hits, Carpenter and Cody Stroud each added two hits and Stroud scored twice for Wesleyan.

Chris Washington (6-2) picked up the win for TWC, allowing three runs on nine hits in six innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out two. Brandon Landrie tossed two hitless innings of relief and Logan Longwith worked around a hit and two errors to post his fifth save.

CU starter Stephen Fischer pitched five innings, giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Austin Williams (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of relief.

Ridge Hoopi-Haslam’s solo homer in the second put Wesleyan ahead in the second, but a leadoff double from Timothy Smith followed by an RBI single by Byrd tied the contest at one in the third.

Chase Edwards and Stroud singled for TWC in the fifth in both scored on Albert’s one-out double to leftcenter for a 3-1 advantage.

The Bulldogs came back in the bottom of the frame, starting with a leadoff double from Byrd. Two batters later Viera singled to the left side, plating the run, and Ryan Dickison followed with a single to left. Alford reached on an error by TWC shortstop Polanco, loading the bases, and Larson’s groundout tied the score at three.

Edwards was hit to leadoff the seventh for Wesleyan and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Heifnar. Stroud’s single to right put runners on the corners before an RBI single to left from Albert.

After a fielder’s choice by Shell McCain, Carpenter and Polanco both singled, plating runs for a 6-3 TWC edge.

In the ninth Byrd singled with one out and went to second when rightfielder Heifnar booted the ball. He moved to third on a groundout by Stiles and scored on a wild pitch. Viera was hit and Dickison reached on another error by Polanco before the game-ending groundout by Alford.

Cumberland has moved its Wednesday doubleheader to Noon Central Time against Lindenwood University-Belleville and will now play its weekend series at the University of Pikeville on Thursday and Friday. Thursday’s doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. CT and Friday’s single game is currently scheduled for the same time.
